What is the SKF 6312-2RS1/C3 bearing?

The SKF Explorer 6312-2RS1/C3 — a single-row deep groove ball bearing, 60 mm bore × 130 mm outside diameter × 31 mm wide, sealed on both sides (2RS1) and built with C3 internal clearance, from SKF's Explorer performance class. The factory boxes state it plainly: SKF Explorer · 6312-2RS1/C3 · 21-MADE IN FRANCE, with batch 156U and the SKF EAN 7316576682063 on the wrap. Three pieces, new and factory-sealed — the boxes in the photos are unopened, exactly as SKF ships them. Recorded 10 December 2025 at about 3 kg for the three. Three photos below.

Why the suffixes matter at the shaft

Two suffixes change how this bearing behaves, and both are the reason maintenance buyers order the designation exactly. The 2RS1 seals are contact seals riding on the inner ring: they hold the factory grease in and keep wash-out out, which makes the bearing a fit-and-forget part — but they add a little friction and cap the speed, so this is the choice for fans, pumps, conveyors and gear units rather than high-speed spindles. The C3 clearance is the internal play between balls and races, set larger than standard to accommodate an interference fit on the shaft, a warm operating environment, or both — when a sealed C3 bearing runs in a cold, lightly-loaded housing it may feel loose by hand, and that is correct; ordering CN to "tighten it up" is how bearings seize at operating temperature. The Explorer marking is SKF's premium line — cleaner steel, better heat treatment — and the French plant code 21 on these boxes is consistent across all three, so the set is a matched production lot. Fit them with an induction heater or a sleeve on the inner ring, never hammer on the outer race, and the sealed-for-life design needs nothing after that but alignment.
