What is the DC-ZS70 lens unit?

Note on the listing title: the queue titles this article an "Industrial Automation PLC Module" — the part photographed is not a PLC. It is the complete zoom lens unit of the Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS70 compact camera (sold as the TZ90 in some markets): the Leica DC VARIO-ELMARIT 1:3.3-6.4/3-129 ASPH zoom block with its focusing and zoom motors, the shutter blade set, the drive flex circuits and the microphone, assembled as one cartridge that drops into the camera body. These are genuine Panasonic service parts — the photo set shows them sealed in Panasonic India Life Solutions spare-part bags ("For India only" on the label), with factory QR serials on each barrel. Two units, new. All 18 photos and 1 video below show these exact lens units.

What this cartridge is, and why it is sold whole

The ZS70's selling point was its 30× zoom in a pocketable body, and that zoom lives in the cartridge photographed here: a stack of moving lens groups driven by two can motors, a leaf shutter that parks closed over the front element, and the flex circuits that carry position data and focus current between the lens block and the camera's main board. Panasonic does not sell the internal pieces of this stack — no separate shutter, no separate zoom motor — because the groups are aligned at the factory as one optical assembly; a dropped camera that grinds its zoom or loses its focus is repaired by swapping the entire unit. That is what makes this part valuable: it is the official fix, factory-sealed, for a camera whose body and sensor are fine but whose lens has failed — the most common failure mode of a travel zoom. The India-only service bags trace these units to Panasonic's authorised spare-parts channel, and the two distinct QR serials (5J08J/0034 and 5J12J/0078) show they are separately produced units, not one split. For repair shops holding ZS70/TZ90 bodies on the bench, this cartridge is the difference between a returned camera and a returned repair.

Rear with FPC and motor
The back of the cartridge: the gold flex circuit draped down the barrel, the silver zoom motor on top, the black mounting flange, and the gold anti-tamper sticker.
QR serial 5J08J
The first unit's factory QR label: 5J08J KY1K2 0034 — with the microphone can and the drive flex beside it on the barrel.
LEICA front ring
The front ring, face-on: LEICA, DC VARIO-ELMARIT 1:3.3-6.4/3-129 ASPH. — the full lens designation engraved around the closed shutter blades.
Zoom motor marking
The silver can motor at close range: MVT1414020 on its shell — the actuator that drives the zoom cam.
Two units front
Two complete cartridges, fronts up: matching LEICA rings, closed shutter blades, drive flexes and motors — the pair as received.
Rear quarter view
Rear quarter: the drive PCB with its gold contacts, both flex circuits, the motor, and the barrel's guide rails — the mechanics of the zoom travel.
Two rears stacked
The pair from the back: QR labels and the gold-finger ends of the flexes — the interfaces that mate to the camera main board.
Panasonic service bags
The factory service bags: blue PE pouches with multilingual recycling labels and the Panasonic India Life Solutions print — spare-parts channel packaging, sealed.
Bag label close-up
The bag label in full: "For India only / Pour l'Inde uniquement / Solo per l'India", Panasonic India Life Solutions Private Limited, LDPE/PE-LD 04 recycling marks — the authorized-channel trail.
Shutter blades parked
The parked shutter: leaf blades closed in a square over the front element — the resting state that protects the glass in a pocket.
Second unit rear
The second unit's back: the flex marked SJB0740A legible on the gold circuit, the motor above, and the flange screw pattern for the body mount.
Pair side by side
The pair side by side on foam: identical front rings, both shutters parked — two independent service units, serials apart.
QR serial 5J12J
The second unit's QR label held to the camera: 5J12J KY1K3 0078 — distinct from the first barrel's serial, confirming two separately produced units.
Barrel rails
The barrel wall: moulded guide rails and cam slots that translate motor rotation into lens-group travel — the zoom's mechanical spine.
Motor marking close
The motor marking in close-up: MVT.TM10-020, W5523S1 etched on the can — the part number a motor-level repair would reference.
Full cartridge profile
The complete cartridge in profile: LEICA ring, closed shutter, barrel stack, motor and flexes — the assembly that drops into the ZS70 body.
Drive flex circuitry
The drive flex at working distance: surface-mount components, soldered pads and the microphone capsule at the frame edge — the electronics that ride on the lens.
Second unit full view
The second cartridge in full: ring, parked shutter, QR 5J12J and the folded flex — as it will arrive to the bench.
