E6C2CWZ5B Incremental Rotary Encoder: Complete Technical Guide and Applications
On this page
What is the Omron E6C2-CWZ5B?
The E6C2-CWZ5B is Omron's 50 mm incremental rotary encoder — the workhorse shaft encoder that reports position and speed to a PLC or drive: 360 pulses per revolution on three channels (A, B and the once-per-rev Z index), NPN open-collector outputs (the CWZ5B build), and a 5 to 24 V DC supply across a 2 m shielded cable whose colour map is printed on the housing — Brown supply+, Blue 0 V, Black OUT A, White OUT B, Orange OUT Z, Shield GND. The die-cast body carries a stainless shaft on a ball-bearing flange with the three-hole mounting pattern, and the carton reads the full identity: TYPE E6C2-CWZ5B, ROTARY ENCODER 旋转编码器, 360P/R, 2m, LOT No. 07823M, MADE IN CHINA — Omron's Shanghai works, matching the intake record. Note on the source photo set: one frame of an unrelated carton label (a differential-pressure transmitter certificate) was filed with this record; it is excluded from this page and the count here follows the encoder photos only. Three units, new in factory boxes, 1-year warranty as recorded at intake. All 10 photos and 1 video below show these exact encoders.

How an incremental encoder reports motion
An incremental encoder does not store an absolute position — it streams events. As the shaft turns, the A channel emits 360 pulses per revolution and the B channel emits the same train offset a quarter-cycle, so the counter downstream sees not just how far the shaft has moved but which direction it moved in; the Z index fires once per revolution as the home mark. That is the whole protocol, and the E6C2-CWZ5B delivers it on open-collector outputs that drop straight into a PLC's high-speed counter inputs at 5 to 24 V — the wide supply window covering both logic-level encoders and 24 V industrial ones. The NPN open-collector build of the CWZ5B suits the sink-input PLCs common in Japanese-standard panels. Physically the 50 mm body is the industry's workhorse format: the stainless shaft on its ball bearing takes the coupling from the driven shaft, the three-hole flange bolts to the bracket, and the shielded cable keeps the pulse trains clean over the two-metre run to the cabinet. Omron's Shanghai works build this unit for the regional market — MADE IN CHINA printed on the carton with the Jinqiao factory address — and three boxed sets with their screws, hex key and coupling sleeve are photographed here: a position-feedback refresh for one machine train, with a spare over the bench minimum.
