The convention, reported by Kyodo News, ran under the theme “Intelligent Manufacturing for a Better Future.” Its layout alone tells a story about where capital is moving.

The venue was deliberately split: 20,000 sqm dedicated to manufacturing innovation and 50,000 sqm to commercial exhibits. That ratio is the headline. Roughly three-quarters of the floor was reserved for deployable hardware and systems rather than concept demonstrations.

That redistribution reflects a maturing market. Automation budgets are shifting away from pilot programmes and toward production-grade retrofits, where controllers, drives, networking and edge hardware must work together on an existing line.

The commercial-to-innovation ratio at Hefei is a useful proxy for buyer behaviour worldwide. When 71% of exhibition space is committed to commercial exhibits, vendors are signalling that their customers have moved past evaluation and into procurement , the phase where PLC selection, I/O compatibility and lifecycle support decide the deal.

The international zone featured multinationals including Continental Tires and Corning Display Technologies, anchoring the show's cross-border character. Alongside them, the event's centre of gravity sat in the connective layer: robotics, industrial software, digital factory platforms and energy infrastructure.

For controls engineers, those categories are not separate markets. They are sequential layers of one architecture, and each layer imposes requirements on the others.
