What is the Toshiba 2SA679 / 2SC1079 transistor pair?

The 2SA679 and 2SC1079 are Toshiba's complementary medium-power transistor pair — the PNP (2SA679) and NPN (2SC1079) devices that classic audio power-amplifier designs use as a matched push-pull pair. Each is a TO-66-style metal-can transistor: a round tin cap on a diamond mounting flange with two fixing holes, two leads through the base, and the red Toshiba print on the cap. The caps carry the gain rank O plus an hFE group suffix — the 2SA679 units here are printed O·70 or O·7D, the 2SC1079 units O·7B or O·78. They arrive seated in white foam trays, twenty per tray, with small groups bagged on red foam; every device is factory-original Toshiba with crisp print and unsoldered legs. The intake records cover three batches — six, twenty and twenty pieces, forty-six in all — received between 17 November and 24 December 2025 (about 0.5 kg per record), and the fifteen photos below show them as received.

Fitting notes

These are the transistors vintage Japanese amplifier designs call for by name, and replacements are matched by more than type number: the hFE group suffix on the cap (·70/·7D on the PNP side, ·7B/·78 on the NPN side) decides how a pair balances in a push-pull stage, so when rebuilding an output stage, sort devices by the same group letter rather than mixing groups. The metal can is the collector — mount it to the heatsink through an insulating washer with compound on both faces, and dress the two leads without stressing the seals at the base. The trays here are factory original with the red Toshiba print crisp and legs unsoldered — unused stock, ready for pairing.
