Steel Mill & Heavy Industry Lubrication Guide

Lubrication in Steel Mills and Heavy Industry

Steel mills, cement plants, mining operations, and paper mills represent the most extreme operating environments for industrial lubricants. Bearings face high loads, shock loading, elevated temperatures, water spray, scale contamination, and continuous operation with limited maintenance access. Lubrication failure in these environments results in costly production downtime measured in millions of dollars per hour.

Critical Requirements

Heavy industry greases require: (1) Extreme Pressure (EP) additives and solid lubricants (MoS2, graphite) for boundary lubrication, (2) High base oil viscosity for load-carrying capacity, (3) Excellent water resistance against spray and immersion, (4) Good adhesion to prevent throw-off from large bearings, (5) Effective sealing action against contaminants, and (6) Wide temperature range for process heat environments.

Recommended KLÜBER Products

  • Staburags NBU 12 and NBU 8 EP: Heavy-duty barium complex greases with MoS2 solid lubricants. Industry standard for rolling mill bearings.
  • PETAMO GHY 441: Lithium complex grease for high-temperature, heavy-load bearings in cement and steel applications.
  • Wolfrakote TOP: High-temperature anti-seize paste rated to 1100°C dry film for bolted joints and fasteners.
  • Klüberlub BE 71-501: Bentonite-thickened grease for high-temperature bearings where conventional soap greases would degrade.

Application Best Practices

For heavy industry: (1) Use automatic or centralized lubrication systems where possible to ensure consistent delivery, (2) Purge bearings at each relubrication to expel contaminants, (3) Monitor bearing temperature and vibration continuously, (4) Use dedicated, labeled equipment for each grease type to prevent cross-contamination, (5) Document lubrication activities and bearing condition for trend analysis.
