The meaning of each part of the programmable controller definition

What does the PLC definition mean, word by word?

Programmable Logic Controller breaks into three design commitments. Programmable: the logic lives in memory and changes in software, so behaviour changes without rewiring. Logic: the controller makes structured, rule-based decisions from inputs, which makes its behaviour predictable and inspectable. Controller: it runs autonomously and deterministically, in a bounded cycle, without an operator in the loop. Each word is a design constraint the manufacturer must satisfy, and each maps to a troubleshooting method when the system misbehaves.

The three words

Each word in the term, and what it commits the device to
Word Meaning Practical implication
Programmable Logic is stored in memory and edited in software Behaviour changes without rewiring; flexibility is the founding value
Logic Decisions follow defined rules from inputs Predictable, inspectable behaviour; the program is the documentation
Controller Runs the decision loop autonomously and deterministically Continuous operation with bounded response time; no operator in the loop

Current platforms add capabilities around that core (networking, data publishing, analytics) without changing the three commitments, which is why the definition from the standards still describes a modern controller accurately.

The standards definition

The formal definition comes from the IEC 61131 standards family: a digitally operating electronic system, designed for use in an industrial environment, using a programmable memory for the internal storage of user-oriented instructions to implement specific functions such as logic, sequencing, timing, counting and arithmetic, controlling machines and processes through digital or analog inputs and outputs. The companion parts cover equipment requirements and testing, the programming languages, and (in current procurement specifications) the security requirements. For a fuller treatment, see the linked definition guide below.

The components behind the words

The components that deliver each word of the definition
Component Role Which word it serves
CPU Executes the logic in a deterministic cycle Logic and Controller
Memory Stores the program and data Programmable
I/O modules Connect sensors and actuators Controller (the interface to the plant)
Power supply Feeds the system Controller (the uptime foundation)
