question

How close are we really to 'lights-out factories' where PLCs and robots run everything autonomously, and what's the one component that always seems to need human intervention?

answer

That's a really insightful question! When I think about fully automated 'lights-out factories' where everything runs without human presence, I have to admit we're getting closer but we're not quite there yet. The vision of PLCs and robots handling everything autonomously is compelling, but there's usually one area that consistently requires human touch.
