HELLA 4RA931773-98 Solid State Relay: Advanced Automotive & Industrial Automation Solution

What is the Hella 4RA 931 773-98?
A HELLA 916A solid state relay (SSR), part number 4RA 931 773-98, made in USA — the little black cube that replaces a mechanical relay where vibration, moisture and cycle count kill moving contacts. The moulding identifies it plainly: HELLA · 916A · SOLID STATE RELAY · HELLA P/N 4RA 931 773-98 · MADE IN USA. The package is the familiar mini-relay cube with four blade terminals in the standard positions, so it drops into the same socket or harness as a conventional electromechanical relay — but inside there is no coil and no contacts to pit or weld; the switching is semiconductor. This unit is in like-new condition: the terminals are bright and show no insertion wear, the housing is unscratched, and the ribbed moulding on the back is clean. Recorded 22 December 2025 at about 0.5 kg as recorded, one piece. Note for spec-checkers: this housing carries only the type and part number — the electrical ratings are not printed on it, so verify current and control voltage against the vehicle or module specification before substituting it into a circuit. Why a solid state relay, and what to check before swapping
Anywhere a relay cycles thousands of times an hour — heated mirrors, auxiliary lamps, pump or fan control on vehicles and machinery — the mechanical contact is the first thing to fail: it pits, it welds, and its coil draws current forever. A solid state relay like this 916A switches with semiconductors instead, so there is no contact wear and no coil current, and the ribbed moulding is there because that silicon dissipates heat on every amp it carries. Three checks before you drop one into a socket that held a mechanical relay. First, the control input: SSRs have a defined input voltage window and a small but real standby draw, so the control module that expected a coil may read the circuit differently. Second, the leakage: solid state outputs leak a few milliamps when off — enough to dim an LED pilot or keep a small load warm, and occasionally enough to keep an ECU awake. Third, the ratings: as noted, this housing prints no numbers, so match 4RA 931 773-98 against the HELLA datasheet for your application rather than copying the rating of the mechanical relay next to it. Get those three right and the swap is exactly why the part exists: the same cube, the same socket, none of the wear.
