Choose a sensor by what it must detect. Proximity sensors detect nearby targets, level sensors monitor material or liquid level, and encoders provide rotation feedback.

Output type matters as much as the sensing function. A switching output reports a state, while an analog output represents a measured value. For a replacement, identify the PLC or controller input that receives the signal before considering a different sensor model.
