Structural Characteristics of Programmable Controllers in 2026

As a PLC professional technician, a deep understanding of the structural characteristics of programmable controllers is still the first step of every maintenance and migration job. The 2024 version of this article was a generic primer: physical chassis, CPU module, I/O, ladder logic, modularity, communication. In 2026 the words have not changed, but the meaning of each one has. Detail

The PLC structural model has not changed , CPU, memory, I/O, power supply, communication, programming environment , but every layer is now a cyber-physical component with its own 2026 expectation: OPC UA over TSN, IEC 62443, IEC 61131-3, IO-Link, integrated functional safety.

Modular backplanes are still the default for ControlLogix 1756, SIMATIC S7-1500, MELSEC iQ-R, Modicon M580 and MP3300, but compact controllers (CompactLogix 5380, S7-1200 G2, FX5, CP2E, M241) are absorbing more of the mid-tier work in 2026.

Ladder logic remains the dominant language, but structured text, function block, CFC and object-oriented IEC 61131-3 are now first-class on every major platform. Choosing a controller in 2026 means choosing a programming model, rather than just a pinout.

The structural model of a programmable controller has not changed since 2024. Every PLC in 2026 , from an Allen-Bradley 1756-L85EP inside a ControlLogix chassis to a Mitsubishi FX5UJ on a small machine , is still built from the same six blocks: the central processing unit, memory, input section, output section, power supply, and programming / communication interface. What has changed is how much each block is expected to do. A 2026 CPU is no longer a single microprocessor. A ControlLogix 1756-L85EP runs a multi-core ARM SoC with dedicated cores for the Logix runtime, EtherNet/IP motion, the safety task (CIP Safety) and the OPC UA Pub/Sub broker. A SIMATIC S7-1500 CPU 1518 runs the same partitioning under a Siemens realtime OS. The 2024 statement “the CPU module is the brain of the device” is still correct, but the brain in 2026 has hemispheres.

The housing is also no longer purely mechanical. A 2026 PLC chassis has to dissipate heat from a 1 GHz class CPU, survive 5 g continuous vibration on a press line, and meet IEC 61131-2 environmental class TX for outdoor cabinets. The metal-or-plastic casing mentioned in 2024 is now typically a zinc-plated steel backplane with an aluminium alloy sub-chassis, conductive-coated, and rated for an extended temperature range of −25 °C to +70 °C. The slot count and width are still standardized per family (1756 is one slot per module, S7-1500 is 35 mm or 25 mm depending on the module), but the slot is now expected to carry up to 1 Gbit/s of backplane traffic for safety, motion and TSN streams, rather than just discrete I/O updates.

Every Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, Schneider, Yaskawa, Panasonic and Fanuc module cited in this article is in current production or in KOEED active stock, and can be quoted within 24 hours via

The CPU is the brain of the device, and in 2026 it is built from a microprocessor, working memory, retain memory and a non-volatile flash for program / firmware storage. The 2024 article correctly noted that speed and processing power affect performance; in 2026 the same statement has to be qualified by the runtime model. A 1756-L85EP executes the Logix task set across multiple cores and a 4 ms periodic task is no longer the headline metric , the headline is how the CPU partitions safety, motion, I/O update and OPC UA over TSN without one task starving another. The same is true for the S7-1500 CPU 1518F (ob给自己换个表达: integrated safety at the same cycle as the standard program), the MELSEC iQ-R R08ENCPU (8 MB program memory, 16 MB data memory, 0.14 ms LD instruction) and the Modicon M580 BMXP581020 (cyber-secure CPU with native Achilles Level 2 hardening).
