Machine-Level Historian Adds Model Context Protocol for AI PLC Data

Industrial artificial intelligence has long been constrained by a simple bottleneck: the raw, high-fidelity signals generated inside programmable logic controllers (PLCs) rarely travel beyond the machine floor in a format AI engines can understand. Real Time Automation (RTA) is closing that gap. Its machine-level industrial historian now supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing AI engin

Detail

MCP is emerging as a standard handshake between AI models and external data tools. Extending it to the machine edge means AI assistants can stop relying on stale, down-sampled copies of production data and instead interrogate the same high-resolution stream used for local PLC troubleshooting.

Originally developed to standardize how AI models access context from external systems, the Model Context Protocol is quickly moving from software tools into industrial hardware.

RTA's historian positions MCP support as a direct line from AI engines to machine truth. Instead of scraping enterprise historians or waiting for batch uploads, an AI engine can query the device for a specific time window, a specific tag, or a specific alarm event.

The result is a far tighter feedback loop between machine behavior and AI-driven analysis , a critical capability for plants where seconds of latency can separate a caught fault from an unplanned shutdown.

RTA describes the device as an edge-based "black box flight data recorder" for automated machinery. Connected directly to machine PLCs through built-in serial and Ethernet ports, it captures high-fidelity, real-time data at the source.

That local capture serves two masters: operators troubleshooting a single machine get the complete, un-sampled picture, while enterprise systems receive down-sampled data optimized for dashboards and analytics.
