High-Temperature Grease Selection for Industrial Applications

High-Temperature Grease Selection

Operating temperature is one of the most critical factors in grease selection. As temperature increases, grease life decreases exponentially — a rule of thumb is that grease life halves for every 15°C increase above 70°C. Selecting the right high-temperature grease can mean the difference between reliable operation and catastrophic bearing failure.

Temperature Ranges by Grease Type

Grease Type Max Continuous Temp Typical Application
Lithium Soap 120-130°C General industrial bearings, electric motors
Lithium Complex 150-180°C Higher-temp industrial bearings
Polyurea 160-180°C Electric motors, sealed bearings
Bentonite (Clay) 180-200°C Oven conveyors, kiln cars
PTFE/Silicone 200-220°C Low-load, high-temp applications
PFPE/PTFE 250-260°C Extreme temperature, chemical resistance, oxygen service
