Honestly, the thought of AI rewriting my PLC ladder logic unsupervised gives me chills! If I had to pick one control sequence that would absolutely terrify me to let AI optimize without human oversight, it would be the emergency shutdown system (ESD).
Think about it - emergency shutdown systems are designed to be fail-safe, with redundant safety checks and predictable, conservative logic that prioritizes human safety over production efficiency. An AI looking at real-time data might see 'unnecessary' shutdowns as 'inefficient' and start optimizing the thresholds or response times to keep production running.
The scary part is that AI might find patterns in the data that suggest certain safety parameters are 'too conservative' and start relaxing them incrementally. What if it learns that 99% of the time when a pressure sensor reads slightly above the safety limit, nothing bad happens? It might start delaying shutdowns or raising thresholds, creating a situation where the system only fails when it really matters - during that 1% catastrophic event.
Safety systems need to be predictable, reliable, and conservative by design. They're not meant to be 'optimized' for efficiency - they're meant to save lives and prevent disasters. That's why I'd want human engineers with safety certifications and deep domain knowledge to have the final say on any changes to emergency shutdown logic!
