Which Yaskawa inverters and safety functions does the CIP Safety option card JOHB-NSC3-MA support?

Yaskawa Electric has started sales of a functional safety communication option card, model JOHB-NSC3-MA, that supports the CIP Safety safety communication standard. The card fits GA700, GA800 (sold in the United States only), CR700 and GA500 series inverters and provides the STO (Safe Torque Off) and SS1-t (Safe Stop 1-time controlled) safety functions over EtherNet/IP. Yaskawa's sales plan lists order start on 8 October 2026, and the announcement states the card can also be added to existing installations.

Key points

  • Yaskawa is offering the JOHB-NSC3-MA as a CIP Safety option card for GA700, GA800 (US only), CR700 and GA500 inverters.
  • The card delivers STO and SS1-t over EtherNet/IP, with safety functions stated as conforming to IEC 61800-5-2.
  • Order start is listed as 8 October 2026, and Yaskawa notes the card can be retrofitted to existing equipment.

Drive coverage and retrofit use

The card is presented as an option for four Yaskawa inverter lines: GA700, GA800 (available only in the United States), CR700 and GA500. Yaskawa says existing equipment can also take the card, which positions it for drive upgrades and equipment modernisation as well as new machines.

Yaskawa frames the benefit in engineering terms: fewer individual safety signal wires, reduced external safety relays and safety circuits, less control panel space, lower design effort and shorter commissioning. No price, lead time or stock position is given in the announcement.

Safety functions and settings

STO safely interrupts the power supply that produces motor torque, preventing unintended starting, and Yaskawa describes it as useful during maintenance, inspection and emergency stop. SS1-t moves to STO after a set time; on this card the emergency stop follows the deceleration time configured in parameter C1-09.

  • STO: safely removes the torque-producing power supply.
  • SS1-t: transitions to STO after the set time.
  • Emergency stop braking time follows parameter C1-09.
