Keyence LR-X100C — CMOS Laser Displacement / Distance Sensor, 100 mm, NPN Output, 1 PC
KEYENCE · LR-X Series · Ultra-Compact CMOS Laser Sensor · 1 PC
The Keyence LR-X100C is an ultra-compact CMOS laser displacement sensor from the
Keyence LR-X series
with a 100 mm sensing range, a visible red semiconductor laser, and an NPN switching output (suffix C).
It is part of the same multi-brand automation catalog KOEED keeps for
Allen-Bradley,
Siemens,
Mitsubishi,
Omron,
Fanuc,
Schneider,
Yaskawa and
Panasonic
lines, and is typically used in semiconductor, electronics, automotive and AGV applications.
The LR-X platform pairs Keyence’s CMOS multi-pixel receiver with a visible red Class 1 / 2 laser
to deliver stable displacement and thickness measurement on glossy, dark or low-reflectivity targets
that defeat conventional through-beam or diffuse-reflect sensors.
1. Key Technical Specifications & Overview
The LR-X100C is the 100 mm “short range” variant of the LR-X family. The C suffix
denotes an NPN open-collector switching output; PNP (suffix P) and IO-Link
/ 4–20 mA variants (suffix IA) are also available on the same body. The
LR-X100C is sold here as a
single piece (1 PC) for prototyping, cell retrofit or spot replacement.

2. Application Scenarios — Where the LR-X100C Fits
The LR-X100C is a short-range displacement / distance workhorse used wherever a
Keyence laser sensor
must resolve a small gap, thickness or profile on a part that ordinary photoelectric switches cannot see.
Within KOEED’s wider
factory-automation
customer base, the LR-X100C is most often specified in the following cell types:
-
Semiconductor wafer thickness & flatness — 100 mm stand-off resolves wafer edge and back-grind profile on 200 / 300 mm wafer handling robots.
-
PCB and flat-panel display gap / height — detects component stand-off, panel-to-bezel gap, and lamination thickness on SMT lines feeding downstream Allen-Bradley or Mitsubishi pick-and-place cells.
-
Bottle / can fill-level detection — non-contact level check on transparent PET or aluminium cans in beverage lines.
-
Tire, rubber and paper caliper / thickness — on-line extrusion and calender control where reflective or low-contrast surfaces are common.
-
Sheet-metal and stamped-part thickness — gap measurement after press or laser-cut stations running on Fanuc robotic cells.
-
Automotive body panel gap & flush — door, hood and fender gap / flush measurement on Yaskawa / Fanuc robotic sealing lines.
-
AGV and mobile-robot obstacle detection — short-range forward scan on automated guided vehicles using a visible-red laser sensor in place of an ultrasonic switch.
-
Pharmaceutical blister and vial inspection — tablet height and cap-seal presence, typically paired with Keyence CV / XG vision systems.
3. Integration & Wiring Notes
The LR-X100C is designed to drop into the same 24 V DC wiring channels as the rest of the LR-X line.
Power (brown), 0 V (blue), NPN output (black) and a configuration / alarm line (white) are brought out on
the M8 4-pin pigtail. The C-suffix NPN output pulls to 0 V on detection, so it is wired to a sinking
digital input on the host PLC.
| PLC / Controller family |
Recommended input type for LR-X100C (NPN) |
Notes |
| Allen-Bradley CompactLogix / ControlLogix |
Sinking 24 V DC digital input (e.g. 1734-IK, 1756-IB16IF) |
Use a sourcing sensor module with PNP variant, or wire NPN to a sinking input module. |
| Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 / S7-1500 |
DC digital input, PNP-sourcing type (e.g. SM 1221, SM 1521) |
NPN sensor wired to a sourcing input; use Siemens S7-1200 / S7-1500 signal modules. |
| Mitsubishi MELSEC iQ-R / Q |
DC input module, positive common (sink) e.g. RX40C7 |
RX-series inputs accept NPN sensors; verify terminal polarity. |
| Omron SYSMAC CP1 / CJ2 / NX |
DC input unit, NPN / PNP universal (CP1W-ID, NX-ID) |
Omron CP1E-N40DR-A and CP1H accept both polarities when DIP-switched. |
| Schneider Modicon M340 / M580 |
BMX DDI 1602 (16-channel 24 V DC sink) |
Use BMXDDI modules for NPN; pair with the LR-X100C 4–20 mA variant for analog thickness. |
| Yaskawa MP2300 / Sigma-7 |
24 V DC discrete input on JEPMC-IO231 / IO301 |
For position feedback combine LR-X with a Yaskawa servo indexer. |
| Panasonic FP-X / FP7 |
AFPX-IN8T / FP7-DI16N DC input |
Panasonic FP series typically uses NPN inputs — direct wiring for the LR-X100C. |
For continuous thickness / distance reading, choose the LR-X100C IA variant (4–20 mA
analog output) and scale the current to engineering units with the
KOEED PLC Analog Calculator.
For IO-Link master integration on a PROFINET / EtherNet/IP fieldbus, prefer the IO-Link version and wire
it into a Keyence or third-party IO-Link master.
4. Installation & Commissioning Tips
-
Mounting geometry. Keep the LR-X100C beam perpendicular to the target — tilt more than 5–10° will pull the receiver off the CMOS pixel and skew distance.
-
Stand-off distance. 100 mm is the nominal range. Do not mount closer than the LR-X near-blind point or you will see “out-of-range” latches in the alarm output.
-
Laser safety. Visible red Class 1 / 2 laser — do not stare into the beam; align the spot with a diffuser card and avoid glossy specular surfaces that retroreflect into operators.
-
Glossy / dark targets. The CMOS multi-pixel receiver handles black rubber and shiny aluminium better than a regular diffuse-reflect sensor, but on mirrored surfaces, tilt 10–15° off perpendicular to avoid direct retroreflection.
-
IP67 sealing. The M8 connector must be fully seated and the pigtail grommet tightened. IP67 rating is for temporary immersion, not continuous wash-down — use a field-encapsulated harness for high-pressure cleaning.
-
24 V DC supply. Use a regulated 24 V industrial PSU; voltage dips below ~20 V will trigger the LR-X brown-out alarm. For long pigtails, derate cable cross-section to keep loop drop below 1 V.
-
Configuration. Teach set-point via the LR-X teach pendant, the IO-Link master, or the IO-Link version’s host PLC. Save the teach value in the PLC tag so a sensor swap can be auto-loaded.
-
Spare head / spare harness. For a 24/7 cell, keep at least one LR-X100C plus a spare M8 harness on the shelf — KOEED stocks the LR-X family for fast cross-shipment. Ask Moritta@KOEED.COM for the LR-X harness part number.
