ABB AI-Enabled Automated Paint Shop Boosts Efficiency and Sustainability at Shanghai Super Factory

ABB launches AI-enabled automated paint shop in Shanghai super factory

ABB has commissioned an AI-powered automated paint shop at its $150M Shanghai super factory, combining ABB robots with RobotStudio simulation and AI optimization for greener, higher-throughput painting.

Performance, sustainability and flexible production

The new line uses 15 robots covering dry-ice cleaning, primer and topcoat spraying, and rapid drying. Low-pressure spray technology and an IPS control system deliver 20% higher spray efficiency and double total capacity while cutting operating costs by 36%.

Key environmental gains include 60% less hazardous paint waste and >98% VOC removal via high-temperature oxidation.

Digital tools, AI and market impact

RobotStudio offline programming and virtual simulation enable process tuning in a digital twin. AI optimizes spray paths and parameters for consistent quality and faster commissioning.

The upgrade supports ABB’s strategic investment in China to serve domestic and Asian markets, localizing R&D, manufacturing and after-sales, with 90% of ABB robots sold in China produced at the super factory.
