PLC industry application trend analysis
On this page
What are the current trends in PLC applications?
Four trends shape where PLC applications are heading: data integration (controllers publishing to plant and cloud systems over OPC UA and MQTT), edge computing (analytics running on or beside the controller), security by design (segmentation, signed firmware and access control as specification lines rather than afterthoughts), and platform consolidation (plants standardising on fewer families to simplify skills and spares). Industry distribution remains led by discrete manufacturing and process industries, with energy and infrastructure growing fastest.
An earlier version of this page quoted compound growth rates and industry-share percentages that could not be verified against a named source. They have been removed.
The four trends
| Trend | What changes in practice |
|---|---|
| Data integration | Controllers publish tag data over OPC UA and MQTT to historians, dashboards and maintenance systems |
| Edge computing | Analytics, pre-processing and even AI inference run on or beside the controller |
| Security by design | Segmentation, signed firmware and role-based access enter the specification at purchase |
| Platform consolidation | Fewer families across the plant: simpler skills, spares and documentation |

Industry distribution
Discrete manufacturing remains the volume base for PLC applications; process industries (chemicals, oil and gas, water) sustain steady demand with process-capable families; food and beverage demand line-flexibility and traceability; energy and infrastructure are the visible growth areas as grid modernisation and renewables add coordinated control points. The direction across all of them is the same: fewer standalone controllers, more networked ones, with the security and data-exchange capability to match.
