Drawing Electrical Control Schematics: A 2026 Principles Update
The 2024 article on drawing electrical control circuit schematic diagrams listed six
Detail
principles: systematic approach, standardized symbols, logical flow, simplicity, clear
labeling, accuracy. All six still hold in 2026. What changed is the tool chain. Schematic
capture moved from hand-drawn D-size sheets to database-driven CAD (EPLAN Electric P8
2026, AutoCAD Electrical 2026, WSCAD Suite, SEE Electrical Expert), the symbol library is
now an IEC-published database, and the schematic is increasingly auto-generated from the
PLC I/O list rather than drawn the other way round. This note is the 2026 rewrite,
IEC 60617 symbols ship as a database (IEC 60617-DB-2025) and are loaded natively into EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, WSCAD, and SEE Electrical.
