Food-Grade Lubrication: NSF H1, H2, H3 and 3H Explained

Reviewed 29 September 2026KOEED technical guides

Which NSF category does a lubrication point need?

H1 covers lubricants for incidental food contact; H2 covers use with no food contact. NSF lists H3 as soluble oils and 3H as release agents. Select the category from the intended use and contact risk, then check the exact product in the NSF directory. The codes describe different uses, not a ranking of lubricant quality.

H1, H2, H3 and 3H at a glance

NSF categories that are easily confused
Category NSF category description What to check in the plant
H1 Lubricants: incidental contact Whether the proposed use fits the product’s registration and label instructions.
H2 Lubricants: no contact Whether food-contact routes are excluded, including leakage or transfer during maintenance.
H3 Soluble oils The specific registered use and instructions for the named product.
3H Release agents The intended release-agent use; this is a separate category from H3.

A lubrication point’s height above or below a conveyor is not enough to select its category. Trace where leakage, wash water, tools or a technician’s gloves could carry the lubricant. Record that assessment with the plant’s food-safety team before approving the product.

Verify the exact product in the NSF directory

  1. Copy the complete product name and manufacturer from the proposed pack or quotation, including any suffix.
  2. Search the NSF White Book and match the product name, manufacturer, registration number and category.
  3. Review the current registration information and product instructions against the intended use. Keep a dated record of the check.
  4. Compare the delivered label with the approved purchase record before releasing the pack for use.

H1 registration does not make a lubricant a food ingredient or approve deliberate addition to food. Follow the registered use, equipment instructions and the site’s contamination controls.

H1 registration and ISO 21469 certification

NSF registration reviews formulation and labeling for the stated use. ISO 21469 certification addresses hygiene requirements relating to lubricant formulation, manufacture and use. If a purchasing specification requires both, verify both for the named product; do not treat one logo as evidence of the other.

Product example: Klüberfood NH1 94-301

Klüber describes NH1 94-301 as a synthetic hydrocarbon grease with a calcium complex thickener and identifies it as NSF H1 registered. This is the formulation for this named product; other food-industry greases may use different base oils and thickeners.

Registration answers a food-contact question. The machine still needs the right viscosity, consistency, temperature performance and delivery method. Include the lubrication-point description, bearing or guide details, measured temperature, speed and washdown conditions in the technical review.

Make the approved choice clear at the lubrication point

Use a lubrication record that names the product and pack, the equipment point, application quantity and interval, and the approved application tool. Identify grease guns clearly and control how they are filled. When changing products, document the cleaning or changeover method and update the record before issuing the new lubricant.

For purchasing, request the current product data sheet and safety data sheet alongside the registration details. Confirm which documents will accompany the delivered product and retain them with the receiving record.

Common category questions

Are H3 and 3H the same category?

No. NSF lists H3 under lubricants as soluble oils and 3H under food-processing substances as release agents. Verify the exact code required by the application.

Will any H1 grease work in a food-processing bearing?

H1 status alone does not establish mechanical suitability. Match the lubricant to the equipment requirements and retain the product’s registration check as a separate part of the approval.

For NH1 94-301 enquiries, include the required pack and quantity, the lubrication point, and any registration or certification documents your site requires.
