Fluke 2042 Cable Locator General-Purpose Wire Tracer & Cable Tester Meter
Fluke (US) Test & Measurement Cable Locator Kit (Transmitter + Receiver) In stock
The Fluke 2042 (also sold as F2042) is a Fluke general-purpose cable locator
kit built for tracing live and de-energized conductors inside walls, conduits, ceilings, floors and
underground runs. The kit ships as a matched pair a transmitter (sender) and a receiver (probe) and
is widely used by electricians, telecom and structured-data cabling installers, building services
teams, alarm and security installers, HVAC technicians and industrial maintenance crews who keep
the
Allen-Bradley,
Siemens,

control cabinets running on the plant floor. Although the 2042 is a test & measurement
instrument rather than a PLC module, KOEED stocks it as part of the wider hand-tools and
maintenance-consumables category that the same B2B maintenance teams purchase alongside their
automation spares think of it as a complement to a ControlLogix rack or a SIMATIC S7 station, not
a replacement. Sourcing T&M gear from the same supplier that ships your
industrial automation spares
means one BOM, one invoice, one freight forwarder.
1. Key Technical Specifications
The 2042 is a portable, battery-powered cable tracer with a clearly limited spec envelope so
field crews can hand it to a junior electrician without fear. Operating voltage on the
transmitter side is rated for 0–600 V AC/DC, which means it is safe to clip onto a live
control bus for tracing without isolating the line. A single 9 V cell powers the transmitter
and four AA cells power the receiver both common, swappable, and field-replaceable. Tracing
distance is published at roughly 2.5 km on de-energized lines and depth detection sits in the
2–3 m range, which covers in-floor conduit, shallow-buried outdoor runs and most
drop-ceiling situations. The full ledger is below.

2. Application Scenarios Where It Fits
The Fluke 2042 is a general-purpose field tool. It is not a control-system component, but the
buyers of it are exactly the same maintenance and commissioning crews that consume PLC, HMI
and servo spares from KOEED. We list it as an adjacent T&M product so that a single
purchase order covers a control-cabinet retrofit, the wire-tracing needed to land the I/O, and
the consumables (test leads, AA cells) the same technician will use that week.
-
Industrial electrician & control-panel maintenance tracing 24 V control
wires, 230 V feeders and 400 V motor leads inside Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, Siemens
SIMATIC S7 and Schneider Modicon cabinets before re-termination.
-
Factory automation retrofits matching old field wiring to new I/O tags
when migrating a Mitsubishi MELSEC, Omron SYSMAC or Fanuc CNC cell to a refreshed PLC.
-
Telecom & structured-data cabling tracing Cat5e / Cat6 runs, telecom
pairs and fiber-strength copper tracer wires in commercial builds and data centers.
-
Building services & HVAC finding power and control runs above
drop-ceilings, behind drywall and under raised floors without breaking the surface.
-
Alarm, security & access-control installers identifying 12 V / 24 V
detector loops, sirens and panel feeds in retrofits.
-
Underground / outdoor runs locating shallow-buried LV feeders, garden
lighting and irrigation valves at 2–3 m depth.
-
Yaskawa, Panasonic and KEYENCE cell commissioning confirming servo
encoder and vision-system cable routing inside machine frames where the original schematic
is missing.
Need to read a fault code on the PLC that drives the same cabinet? KOEED also publishes a free
PLC Error Code Database
that covers Siemens, Mitsubishi and Omron faults the 2042 and the error-code lookup cover
the two ends of the same diagnosis workflow (find the wire, then read the fault).
3. Integration & Wiring Notes
The Fluke 2042 supports three operating modes and choosing the right one is the difference
between a five-minute trace and a wasted hour. The notes below are the way we describe the
modes to our own technicians and to the maintenance leads at customer sites.
-
Single-pole mode one transmitter lead on the conductor, the other to a
known earth/ground. Best for tracing individual cores inside multi-conductor cables, and
the only safe mode when the target cable is short or its far end is unreachable.
-
Two-pole mode transmitter connected across the two conductors of the
pair. Gives the strongest signal and the longest trace distance, ideal for the published
2.5 km specification.
-
Closed-loop mode transmitter looped between the start and end of the
cable. Use when you need the receiver to ignore parallel runs and pick out a specific
cable in a crowded tray.
On the safety side, the 2042 is rated to 600 V AC/DC, so it can be connected to a live
control bus in a Schneider Modicon, Allen-Bradley CompactLogix or Yaskawa MP cabinet without
isolating the line which is often impossible on a running process. Always confirm the
cabinet is at safe arc-flash distance, use the supplied test leads, and respect the
instrument’s CAT rating. For the 600 V system that drives a Fanuc spindle or a Siemens
Sinamics drive, the 2042 is a tracing tool only; it does not replace a
PLC diagnostic
workflow when the fault is inside the controller.
4. Installation & Commissioning Tips
-
Pre-check the batteries. A weak 9 V in the transmitter halves the
effective trace distance. Replace both the 9 V and the four AAs at the start of every
shift if the tool is in a rotation kit.
-
Start on a known-good reference run. Before tracing the unknown cable,
confirm the kit works on a cable whose routing you already know e.g. a known power
feed in the same cabinet.
-
Pick the mode for the situation. Two-pole for distance, single-pole
for individual cores, closed-loop for crowded trays. See section 3.
-
Move the receiver slowly and rotate it. The receiver is directional;
the strongest signal lies along the axis of the cable. A 90° rotation drops the
signal sharply.
-
Mark the path as you go. Painter’s tape on the floor or wall
beats going back over the same wall twice with a second technician watching.
-
After commissioning, file the route in the cabinet. Print a single-page
routing sketch and tape it inside the panel door the next person to open the cabinet
will thank you, especially if the cabinet is one of several Fanuc, Mitsubishi or
Omron cells on the line.

5. Procurement, Warranty & Lead Time
KOEED sources the Fluke 2042 alongside our nine core automation brands Allen-Bradley,
Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, Fanuc, Schneider, Yaskawa, Panasonic and KEYENCE so a single
RFQ can cover the cable locator, the PLC it will be used on, and any spare I/O or HMI the
same project needs. We treat the 2042 as an adjacent T&M product in the
China sourcing
catalogue rather than a flagship line, which is exactly why it is attractive to bundle with
a control-cabinet retrofit: one supplier, one freight invoice, one customs clearance.
