Application Scenarios — Where It Fits
The PowerFlex 700S is engineered for demanding motion profiles, not just plain V/Hz
fan-and-pump duty. With Force Technology flux vector and high-resolution encoder feedback,
the 20DC2P1A0EYNANBNE handles tight torque, speed, and position loops at the small end of
the 700S range. Typical deployments include:
- Small conveyor and material handling lines that need accurate speed regulation rather than simple start/stop
- Winders, unwinders, and web tension stands in packaging and converting lines
- Small extruders and metering pumps where torque control at low speed is required
- Indexing tables, rotary cut-offs, and small machine-tool spindles
- Wire-draw, stranding, and cable-reel lines with closed-loop dancer / tension control
- Test stands and laboratory drives used by equipment builders for repeatable motion profiles
When comparing across platforms, engineers often weigh the 700S against
Siemens Sinamics S120,
Mitsubishi MR-J4,
Yaskawa Σ-7,
and Schneider Lexium
drives. The 700S tends to win when the cabinet is already a Logix environment
(ControlLogix / CompactLogix) and EtherNet/IP is the backbone, because the drive
profiles natively in Studio 5000. For smaller standalone cabinets, the same horsepower
range is also available from
Omron
1S-series or Panasonic
Minas A5, while KEYENCE
vision systems and Fanuc
servos typically cover the CNC and discrete-parts side of the same machine.
Integration & Wiring Notes
The 20DC2P1A0EYNANBNE ships without a Human Interface Module (HIM), so you will
need either a 20-HIM-A6 / 20-HIM-C6S hand-held, a panel-mount 20-HIM-A3, or you
can configure it entirely from DriveTools SP / Studio 5000 over the embedded
DPI / DSI port. A 24 V DC logic power supply is required for the control
board; the drive does not power itself from the 480 V bus for control logic.
-
Power wiring: L1 / L2 / L3 input and T1 / T2 / T3 output follow standard 700S frame C labeling; respect the 480 V AC, 3-phase rating only. Do not back-feed DC bus from another drive on this rating.
-
Encoder: Use the dedicated E-coded (SyncLink) feedback port for a Stegmann / Heidenhain 11-bit or 17-bit high-resolution encoder. Shielded twisted pair, drain grounded at the drive end only.
-
STO (Safe Torque Off): The integrated safety terminals (S1, S2, S11, S12, S21, S22) accept a category-3 / PLd stop signal directly — no external safety relay required for basic STO. Add a safety contactor upstream if your risk assessment calls for it.
-
Communication modules: 20-COMM-E (EtherNet/IP), 20-COMM-C (ControlNet), 20-COMM-P (Profibus), or 20-COMM-Q (Profinet) plug into the top DPI port. For a Logix-class machine, EtherNet/IP is the default.
-
Brake: N-coded units do not include a brake IGBT. If the application needs a holding or dynamic brake, choose the matching 20DxxxAxNANBNN variant, or fit an external braking resistor sized to 150% of motor rated power for one minute duty.
-
Motor compatibility: Standard induction motors in the 1.1–1.5 kW range pair cleanly. For permanent-magnet or synchronous-reluctance motors, run an autotune in Flux Vector mode and verify encoder polarity before releasing the axis.
Cable segregation, EMC ferrite on the encoder shield, and PE grounding at the drive
chassis are the three items that most often get skipped and then show up as
encoder-fault codes at commissioning. Plan for them up front.
Installation & Commissioning Tips
-
Mounting clearance: Frame C needs at least 100 mm above and below for vertical airflow. Side-by-side mounting is allowed only when ambient stays below 40 °C, otherwise derate by 5% per °C above 40.
-
Cabinet temperature: Keep the drive below 50 °C at the heatsink. In sealed cabinets, size the heat exchanger to the 700S dissipation figure (~50 W at 2.1 A continuous, normal duty).
-
Pre-power checks: Confirm input voltage 480 V ± 10%, phase rotation correct, PE bonded, encoder cable shield landed only at the drive end, and the STO loop closed before applying the 480 V mains.
-
First power-up sequence: Run Start-Up in DriveExplorer / DriveTools SP to set motor nameplate data, then run a Static Autotune. For encoder-controlled applications, follow with a Rotate Autotune if the line can be safely uncoupled.
-
Direction & polarity: Toggle parameter 174 (Reverse Disable) and confirm the encoder A/B/I channel order matches the motor rotation. Forcing positive feedback on the encoder avoids a hunting loop that looks like a tuning problem.
-
Firmware alignment: Verify the drive firmware matches the AOP / Studio 5000 Add-On Profile version. The 700S was revised multiple times (v1.x through v14+); mismatched firmware is the leading cause of EDS / AOP import errors on older cabinets.
-
Safety acceptance test: Validate the STO function with the actual safety relay and verify the drive reports a Safe-Off state (status word bit set) on each stop. Sign off the SAT before the line goes into production.
If the drive faults at first run, the
PLC error code database
and the
AI diagnostic tool
on the KOEED site are a quick way to decode a 700S fault number, or you can
send a photo of the HIM to Moritta@KOEED.COM
and we will help cross-reference it.
