Klüber to Mobil Bearing Grease Cross Reference: Selection Checks

Reviewed 29 September 2026KOEED technical guides

Can a Mobil grease replace a specified Klüber grease?

A replacement needs to match the bearing application and the equipment maker’s requirements. The manufacturer sources reviewed here do not establish a direct Klüber-to-Mobil interchange. Use the table below to decide which data to compare, then obtain approval for the exact product and changeover procedure.

Where to start the comparison

Begin with the full grease name on the maintenance record. “Klüber bearing grease” is too broad: ISOFLEX NBU 15, ISOFLEX TOPAS NB 52 and Klüberplex BEM 41-132 have different formulations. A shared application description can help you find a candidate, but it does not establish equivalent performance.

Klüber products and the questions a Mobil comparison must answer
Specified Klüber product Published formulation or application Next comparison step
ISOFLEX TOPAS NB 52 Synthetic hydrocarbon oil; barium complex thickener If Polyrex EM is proposed, compare its polyurea formulation, operating data and the equipment’s approved lubricant list.
ISOFLEX NBU 15 Spindle grease with ester, synthetic hydrocarbon and mineral oils; barium complex thickener Ask the spindle maker for a named alternative and its filling and running-in instructions.
Klüberplex BEM 41-132 Rolling-bearing grease with synthetic hydrocarbon and mineral oils; special lithium soap For a motor-bearing application, check the exact bearing and duty before considering Polyrex EM.

What to put beside the product data sheets

The useful comparison is between two products in one bearing. Record the bearing designation, shaft speed, measured operating temperature, load, seals and exposure to water or process fluids. Include the present grease and the reason for changing it, such as a supply problem or a documented lubrication failure.

  • Compare base-oil viscosity at the same reference temperatures, then assess the viscosity required at the bearing’s operating temperature.
  • Check consistency, starting conditions and lubricant delivery. An NLGI grade describes consistency; it does not identify base-oil viscosity.
  • Use the same speed-factor definition on both sides of a comparison.
  • Identify who can approve a substitution and what evidence they need.

For the distinction between consistency and base-oil viscosity: SKF: bearing maintenance handbook, page 185.

Treat mixing as a separate decision

Even after a substitute has been accepted for service, the old and new greases still need a changeover plan. Ask the lubricant suppliers about the exact pair and the likely amount of residual grease. A general thickener-compatibility chart cannot establish performance in this particular bearing.

The maintenance instruction should state how the bearing will be cleaned or purged, how much grease to apply, and what to record after restart. Follow the equipment maker’s access and service procedures; a sealed bearing may require replacement rather than field relubrication.

A useful replacement request

Send these details together

Current product and label photo; equipment and bearing designation; speed and measured temperature; reason for replacement; proposed product; required pack and quantity; and the manual page listing the approved lubricant.

Keep the supplier’s product data sheet and the equipment approval with the maintenance record. A quotation establishes what is being supplied; it does not approve the engineering change.

Common replacement questions

Does the same NLGI grade mean the greases are equivalent?

No. Products with the same consistency can have different base oils, viscosities, thickeners and application requirements. Compare the full formulation and service data.

Can a motor-bearing recommendation be used for a spindle?

Obtain the spindle maker’s recommendation for that assembly. The bearing arrangement, speed, fill quantity and running-in procedure need to be considered together.
