Omron H8PS-8BF Cam Positioner: Comprehensive Guide to Industrial Automation Control
On this page
What this delivery is: one Omron H8PS-8BF cam positioner, brand new in the factory box — 24 VDC supply, NPN transistor outputs, rotary-encoder input, Made in Japan, LOT NO. 2251, QTY. 1 — received 2026-01-14, 0.5 kg, one-year warranty. The H8PS is the replacement generation for the classic electromechanical cam switch: instead of cams bolted to a shaft, it reads a rotary encoder on the machine's shaft and switches its outputs at the angular positions you program. The 8BF suffix decodes on the shell itself: eight outputs, NPN polarity.
Reading the connections
The wiring is all printed on the case. The encoder enters through the round 12-pin connector on the top face, labelled INPUT (ROTARY ENCODER). The output bank is a row of eight terminals numbered 1 through 8, each an NPN open-collector transistor rated 100 mA max at 30 VDC, sharing COM at terminal 13 with the 24 VDC supply on terminal 12 — the print shows the eight transistor symbols in a line with "(NPN)" at the left margin. Two special outputs sit aside: TACHOMETER at terminal 9 (30 mA max), which mirrors shaft speed as a pulse train, and RUN OUT at terminal 10. The front face carries the LCD and three keys — CHECK, OUT No. and STEP — which is how you walk through output numbers and set their on/off angles; the settings live in non-volatile memory, so a power cycle does not lose the cam profile.

What a cam positioner replaces
Machine builders once solved "do X at shaft angle Y" with a cam shaft and adjustable switches — mechanical, dependable, and miserable to reconfigure: every angle change meant loosening cam clamps and re-dialling. The H8PS does the same job in software: type the angles once, and changing a sequence is a key-press, not a rebuild. Four-output and eight-output versions share the platform, so plants standardise on the eight-output box even where three outputs are wired — the spare fits every machine. Typical duty: rotary tables, indexing stations, multi-step packaging wheels — anywhere a shaft position drives a sequence. One wiring caution from the shell: the outputs sink current (NPN), so the loads wire between a positive rail and the output terminals — hanging them to 0 V instead gives a dead panel that looks like a failed positioner.
