Johnson Controls F61KB-11C Water Flow Switch — Paddle / Pressure-Differential, HVAC Chilled & Hot Water Proving
Johnson Controls · F61 Series · Paddle Flow Switch · In stock
The Johnson Controls F61KB-11C is a paddle-type, pressure-differential HVAC water flow switch from the F61 series, used to prove flow in chilled water, hot water, condenser water, and boiler distribution loops. With its 1-1/4" to 6" pipe coverage, SPDT 5 A / 250 VAC contact, and NEMA 1 enclosure, it is a long-standing workhorse in commercial and industrial building automation retrofits and new BAS builds.
KOEED stocks the F61KB-11C alongside legacy Johnson Controls F61 spare switches and cross-vendor replacements from Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, Fanuc, Schneider, Yaskawa, Panasonic, and KEYENCE, so a maintenance team can rebuild a chilled-water plant from a single BOM.
Key Technical Specifications / Overview
The F61KB-11C is part of Johnson Controls’ F61 series of paddle / pressure-differential water flow switches. The “B-11C” suffix indicates a specific pipe-size range and factory calibration setpoint, making it a drop-in replacement for the original F61KB-11C in retrofit jobs and a standardized model for new HVAC plant designs where flow-proving interlocks are required.

Application Scenarios / Where It Fits
The F61KB-11C is a versatile HVAC-side flow-proving device. It is engineered to interlock a pump, chiller, boiler, or air-handling unit with proof of real water flow — so a chiller will not run dry, a boiler will not fire on no flow, and a chilled-beam or fan-coil circuit will not ice up. Typical deployment sites include:
- Chilled water distribution pump proving in central plants and chiller rooms
- Hot water boiler flow proving and low-fire interlock on hydronic heating
- Condenser water flow switch on water-cooled chillers and cooling towers
- Makeup water flow monitoring on closed hydronic loops
- Chilled-beam, fan-coil unit and heat-pump flow proving
- Plant-wide retrofits where a legacy Johnson Controls F61 is being replaced without re-engineering the BAS sequence
In multi-vendor plants, F61KB-11C units are commonly wired into Allen-Bradley CompactLogix or ControlLogix racks, Siemens S7-1200 / S7-1500 systems, Schneider Modicon M340 / M580, or a Johnson Controls Metasys / Facility Explorer BAS. KOEED keeps the matching digital I/O, power supplies, and signal-conditioning parts in stock so the flow switch and its host controller can ship on a single BOM.
Integration & Wiring Notes
The F61KB-11C is a passive, dry-contact device — it does not require 24 V power to operate. The SPDT contact is wired to the digital input of a BAS controller, a PLC, or a relay coil using the three terminals below.
-
Common (C): shared terminal for both poles of the SPDT contact.
-
Normally Open (NO): closes when flow is above the calibrated setpoint — wire this to a “flow proven” digital input on the controller.
-
Normally Closed (NC): opens on flow — useful for fail-safe wiring where loss of signal must trigger a plant alarm.
-
Conduit entry: NEMA 1 housing accepts standard 1/2" conduit; seal per local code to keep condensation out of the switch enclosure.
-
Surge protection: for inductive loads (motor contactors, solenoid coils) driven by the same contact, fit an RC snubber or varistor across the coil to extend contact life.
When the F61KB-11C is feeding a controller from a non-Johnson vendor (for example, an Omron CP1E, a Mitsubishi MELSEC, or a Yaskawa MP controller), confirm the digital input module’s wetting voltage and that the F61KB-11C’s 5 A / 250 VAC rating is well above the input card’s sink/source current. Use the KOEED PLC error code lookup tool to verify the right input wiring pattern for each platform.
Installation & Commissioning Tips
-
Mounting orientation: install on a horizontal pipe with the paddle hanging vertically into the flow stream — this is the orientation the factory calibration assumes.
-
Straight-pipe run: keep at least 5 pipe diameters of straight run upstream and 3 diameters downstream of the switch to avoid paddle flutter from turbulence.
-
Paddle trim: cut the supplied paddle to match the actual pipe diameter; a paddle that is too long will bind, and one that is too short will not produce a clean setpoint trip.
-
Air bleed: vent air from the piping before energising pumps — trapped air pockets are the #1 cause of false “no flow” trips on a new install.
-
Trip test: during commissioning, drop the pump and confirm the SPDT contact transitions at the calibrated flow setpoint; log the value in your BAS trend for future troubleshooting.
-
Annual check: inspect the paddle and linkage for scale, biological fouling, or debris — chilled-water loops with poor water treatment will coat the paddle and shift the trip point.
For projects that pair a Johnson Controls flow switch with controllers from other vendors, the KOEED AI Diagnostic Tool can take a nameplate photo and recommend a cross-vendor spare, including compatible F61 family variants and current-production alternatives.
