Eaton APR48-ES 1800W Rectifier Module — -48V DC Telecom-Grade Power Conversion
Eaton (US) · APR48-ES Series · 1800W Hot-Pluggable Rectifier · 1PC
The Eaton APR48-ES is a 1800W hot-pluggable rectifier module designed for -48V DC telecom power
plants (also available in +24V variants for legacy sites). Built by Eaton’s
Eaton power-quality
division (successor to Marconi, Lineage Power, and GE Critical Power), the APR48-ES slots into a 1U
subrack with a 295mm mounting depth and delivers clean, regulated -48V DC from a universal
90–275VAC input. It is the workhorse module behind thousands of -48V plants powering
factory automation,
telecom base stations, and enterprise DC bus rooms.
For sourcing teams maintaining multi-vendor sites, KOEED keeps APR48-ES modules alongside matching controllers,
subracks, and DC distribution panels, and can quote a full BOM
that bundles the Eaton rectifier with adjacent components from
Allen-Bradley,
Siemens,
Mitsubishi,
Omron,
Fanuc,
Schneider,
Yaskawa,
Panasonic, and
KEYENCE.

Notes: The APR48-ES shares its 1U / 295mm mechanical envelope with the earlier APR48-3G and
APR24-ES variants, which is why it is often subbed into legacy Marconi and Lineage Power
power shelves. Confirm shelf backplane keying (48V vs 24V) before replacing a module in place.
Application Scenarios — Where the APR48-ES Fits
-
Telecom base stations & mobile switching centers. 4G / 5G macro cells, BSC / RNC sites, and microwave backhaul nodes that need a compact, hot-swappable -48V plant.
-
Enterprise & data center DC bus. Distributed -48V DC distribution to network switches, optical transport, and edge compute racks in hybrid AC/DC rooms.
-
Industrial process control & PLC backplane power. Stable -48V supply for
Allen-Bradley,
Siemens,
Mitsubishi, and
Schneider PLC cabinets that require negative-rail DC.
-
Robotics & CNC machine cells. -48V aux supply for
Fanuc and
Yaskawa servo amplifiers where the controller cabinet is factory-DC, not AC.
-
Vision inspection & sensor stations. Low-noise DC feed for
KEYENCE vision systems and
Omron photoelectric networks sharing a common -48V bus.
-
Railway signaling & SCADA RTUs. Trackside -48V plants where the rectifier must run from wide-range AC, tolerate temperature swing, and survive live swap.
-
Panasonic & HMI-heavy workcells. Auxiliary DC rail for
Panasonic FP-series PLCs and operator HMI stacks.
Compared with general-purpose AC-to-DC bricks, the APR48-ES adds plant-grade supervision: current
sharing across paralleled modules, float / equalize charge control via the system controller, and
graceful fan-failure de-rating. That is what makes it the right drop-in for telecom, rail, and
industrial -48V rooms — not the cheapest brick, but the one with the right management
protocol stack.
Integration & Wiring Notes
The APR48-ES is a blind-mate module: AC input, -48V return / live, and signal backplane all
land on the rear connector of the host shelf. Field wiring therefore happens at the subrack,
not the module itself. A few integration points that consistently come up on integration
calls:
-
Shelf compatibility. Designed for the APR48-ES subrack family. Mechanical and keying-compatible with legacy APR48-3G shelves, but firmware handshake may differ — check controller firmware notes before mixing generations.
-
AC feed. One dedicated breaker per module, sized for the worst-case 275 VAC input current. Do not daisy-chain the AC feed across multiple rectifiers.
-
DC return. Use a single-point ground for -48V return per TIA / ETSI grounding practice to avoid ground-loop noise reaching downstream
Omron or
KEYENCE analog front ends.
-
Battery bus. When the APR48-ES feeds a battery-backed -48V string, size the DC cabling for the full battery discharge current, not just the rectifier-rated load.
-
Controller link. The CAN / RS-485 bus to the plant controller (SC200 or successor) carries load share, alarm, and on/off commands. Terminate the bus at both ends; never star the controller mid-run.
-
Load sharing. Parallel APR48-ES modules auto-balance via the backplane, but only if each module sees the same firmware revision. A mixed-firmware shelf can current-oscillate under step load.
-
Ventilation clearance. Keep the front intake and rear exhaust clear by at least 100 mm — this is the most common cause of premature fan failure we see in the field.
Cross-vendor note: the APR48-ES uses the same -48V rail as
Siemens SITOP and
Schneider Galaxy
plants at the bus level, but the controller protocol is proprietary. If you are migrating
from a third-party plant, the rectifier will parallel cleanly, but the SCADA / alarm mapping
will not — budget time for controller-side point re-mapping.
Installation & Commissioning Tips
-
Pre-power checks. Verify shelf AC feed is off and locked-out / tagged-out (LOTO) before inserting a new module. Confirm the slot keying matches the variant (48V vs 24V) before sliding the unit in.
-
Seating. Push the module in until the front faceplate is flush with the shelf — the blind-mate connector is on a floating plate, so partial seating can give intermittent output under vibration.
-
First power-up. With the AC breaker closed, the module should ramp to -54.5 V float within 5–10 seconds. The green “DC OK” LED and the absence of an audible fan alarm are the two go/no-go signals.
-
Controller handshake. On a fresh shelf, run the controller’s rectifier auto-discovery. The APR48-ES will report serial, firmware, output voltage, and current — confirm the controller log shows all expected modules.
-
Load step test. Apply a 50% step load and watch the controller current-share graph. Modules should re-balance within 1–2 seconds; a slow re-balance usually means a backplane pin issue, not a module fault.
-
Thermal soak. After 4 hours at full load, scan the front grille with a thermal camera. Hot spots above 60 °C typically point to blocked intake, not a defective module.
-
Firmware alignment. If you are topping up a shelf that already has APR48-ES modules, match the firmware revision. Mixed revisions on the same CAN bus can throw false current-share alarms.
-
Spare strategy. For unmanned sites, keep one hot-standby module per shelf in the same firmware batch. The APR48-ES supports N+1 redundancy by design — but only if the standby module is online and pre-shared.
-
Document the row. After commissioning, log the slot position, serial, and firmware of every module in the plant register. This is the single biggest time-saver when a module fails two years later and you need a like-for-like replacement.
If you are integrating the APR48-ES into a larger cell that also runs
Mitsubishi,
Allen-Bradley, or
Panasonic controls on
the same cabinet, segregate the -48V return path from any 24V I/O returns to avoid ground
interaction on fault events.
