What Is the IEC711 Artificial Ear Tester?

The IEC711 Artificial Ear (also called an ear simulator or acoustic coupler) is a precision acoustic measurement device that mimics the acoustic impedance of the average human ear canal. It contains a calibrated measurement microphone housed in a cavity whose volume and geometry conform to the IEC 60318-4 (formerly IEC 60711) standard. When you insert an in-ear monitor (IEM), earbud, or hearing aid into the coupler opening and play a test signal, the microphone captures the actual sound pressure level (SPL) at the simulated eardrum position -- giving you a true frequency response measurement rather than an approximated reading from a flat-plate microphone.

How to Get Useful Measurements -- Setup Tips

1. Seal quality is everything. If the IEM tip does not seal perfectly against the coupler opening, you will see a bass roll-off that is a measurement artifact, not the real response. Use the correct-size silicone adapter for your earphone nozzle and press firmly until the bass response stabilizes on screen.

2. Calibrate your audio interface. The microphone requires 48V phantom power. Before measuring, run a loopback calibration of your audio interface (output to input directly) so that REW or ARTA can compensate for the interface own frequency response. This step is often skipped and leads to misleading results.

3. Mind your drive level. Earphones are typically measured at 94 dB SPL (1 Pascal) or 104 dB SPL at the coupler. Driving them too hard will distort and give a false reading; too quiet and the noise floor will contaminate the measurement. Use the REW SPL meter function to set the correct level before running a sweep.

Do I need a calibration file to get accurate measurements?

For absolute SPL accuracy, yes -- the calibration file compensates for the specific microphone frequency response deviations. For relative comparisons (comparing IEM A to IEM B), the calibration file is less critical because both measurements share the same microphone and coupler, so any deviations cancel out. Many DIY users skip the calibration file and still get useful comparative data.

Can I measure over-ear headphones with this coupler?

Not directly. The IEC711 coupler is designed for insert-type earphones that seal inside an ear canal. Over-ear and on-ear headphones require a different fixture -- typically a flat-plate coupler with a pinna simulator (compliant with IEC 60318-1 or 60318-3). If you try to press a full-size headphone against the IEC711 opening, you will get non-standard results that cannot be compared to published measurements.

What software works with this for measurement sweeps?

REW (Room EQ Wizard) is free, actively maintained, and has built-in support for impedance and frequency response measurement. ARTA is another option with more advanced analysis features (paid license for full functionality). Both work with any ASIO-compatible audio interface. For a quick-and-dirty check, Audacity with the Plot Spectrum function will work, but you will not get proper SPL calibration or phase information.
