What Are These Forklift Carbon Brushes?

These are carbon motor brushes for the J230 starter motor used in electric forklifts. A carbon brush is the replaceable wear component that conducts current between the stationary wiring and the rotating commutator of a DC motor. As the motor runs, the brush material gradually wears down -- this is by design; the brush is the sacrificial interface. When the brushes wear below their minimum length, they lose spring tension against the commutator, causing arcing, reduced starting torque, and eventually a starter motor that clicks but will not crank. This 10-piece set provides two size options: 9x19x20mm and 9x19x14mm, allowing you to match the existing brush dimensions.

In short: The brushes that bring a dead forklift starter motor back to life for the cost of a lunch -- if the starter just clicks, check the brushes before you buy a whole new starter.

Signs Your Carbon Brushes Need Replacement

1. Starter solenoid clicks but motor does not turn. The solenoid is engaging, but the brushes are not making adequate contact with the commutator. Sometimes tapping the starter body with a hammer will temporarily jar the brushes enough to make contact -- if this works, the brushes are worn past their service limit.

2. Excessive sparking visible through the brush inspection windows. Some arcing at the brush-commutator interface is normal. But visible flashes accompanied by a burning smell indicate the brushes are bouncing or have worn unevenly.

3. Brush length below minimum. Remove the brushes and measure. Most forklift starter brushes have a wear line marked on the side. If the brush is shorter than about 50% of its new length or is below the wear line, replace it. Do not wait for it to fail -- a worn-through brush will gouge the commutator, turning a simple brush replacement into a starter rebuild.

Can I sand carbon brushes to fit if they are slightly oversize?

Yes -- carbon brushes are designed to be fitted. If the brush is 0.2-0.5mm oversize for the holder, you can carefully sand the sides on fine-grit sandpaper (400-600 grit) laid on a flat surface. Sand evenly on all sides, checking fit frequently. The brush should slide freely in the holder without binding, but without excessive play that would allow it to tilt and dig into the commutator. Do NOT sand the contact face that rides on the commutator -- that face should be flat and square to the sides.

How do I seat new brushes after installation?

New brushes have a flat face, but the commutator is curved. You need to "bed" or "seat" the brushes so they achieve full contact. The proper method: place a strip of fine-grit commutator sanding paper (not regular sandpaper -- it leaves abrasive residue) between the brush and commutator with the abrasive side facing the brush. Pull the paper back and forth a few times, then remove and inspect. The brush face should show a curved contact patch matching the commutator diameter. Clean all carbon dust out of the motor before reassembly.
