What Is the 10-36V to 24V Isolated DC-DC Converter?
The 10-36V to 24V DC-DC Converter is a 240-watt isolated power converter that accepts a wide input voltage range (10V to 36V DC) and outputs a regulated 24V DC at up to 10 amps. The "isolated" designation means there is galvanic separation between input and output — no direct electrical connection — which protects downstream equipment from input-side voltage spikes, noise, and ground loop issues. The waterproof enclosure (potted/sealed) allows installation in exposed locations: vehicle engine bays, marine bilge areas, outdoor solar installations, and industrial washdown environments.
In short: This converter takes any DC voltage between 10 and 36 volts (from a 12V or 24V battery bank, vehicle alternator, or solar array) and outputs a clean, regulated 24V DC at up to 10 amps — 240 watts. If you need to power 24V equipment from a 12V or 24V nominal DC source, this is the power conditioning module you install between them.
Installation Requirements
1. Input Wiring and Fusing
At full load (240W output, ~85-90% efficiency), the converter will draw approximately 22-27 amps from a 12V input source. This is substantial current — use appropriately sized wiring (at least 10 AWG / 6mm² for runs under 2 meters, thicker for longer runs) and install a fuse or DC circuit breaker rated at 125% of the maximum input current (approximately 30-35A) on the input positive lead as close to the power source as practical. The fuse protects the wiring, not the converter — in the event of a short circuit, the wiring must be protected from becoming an ignition source.
2. Thermal Management
Even though the enclosure is sealed/waterproof, the converter still needs to dissipate heat. The aluminum case acts as a heatsink. Mount the converter to a clean, flat metal surface using all mounting points — the metal-to-metal contact helps conduct heat away from the converter. Do not wrap the converter in insulation or install it in an enclosed space with no airflow. At full 240W load, the case temperature may reach 60-70 degrees C in still air — this is normal but requires clearance around the unit.
3. Input Voltage Range — Wide but Not Infinite
The specified input range is 10V to 36V DC. Below 10V, the converter may shut down or become unstable. Above 36V will likely damage the input stage. If your DC source is a 12V lead-acid battery, the actual voltage varies from approximately 11.5V (discharged) to 14.4V (charging) — all well within range. A 24V battery bank ranges from about 23V to 28.8V — also within range. However, a "24V" solar panel's open-circuit voltage can reach 37-45V, which may exceed the 36V maximum — always check your panel's Voc specification before connecting directly.

Typical Deployment Scenarios
-
Vehicle-to-equipment power: Powering 24V industrial sensors, controllers, or communication equipment from a 12V or 24V vehicle electrical system, with isolation preventing alternator noise from coupling into sensitive electronics.
-
Marine DC distribution: Stepping up/down between 12V and 24V battery banks on boats and yachts, where different equipment requires different voltages.
-
Solar/battery systems: Converting variable solar panel or battery voltage to a fixed 24V bus for consistent equipment operation regardless of state of charge.
-
Telecom and remote monitoring: Powering 24V remote radio, cellular modem, or data logger equipment from available 12V or 24V site power.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "isolated" mean and why does it matter for my application?
Galvanic isolation means there is no direct electrical path between the input terminals and the output terminals — energy is transferred through a transformer inside the converter. This matters because: (1) a short circuit or voltage spike on the input side cannot propagate directly to the output and damage your equipment, (2) ground loops between the input source and the output load are broken, which can eliminate noise and measurement errors in sensitive systems, and (3) you can configure the output as a floating supply or tie either output terminal to ground as your application requires, without affecting the input circuit.
Can I connect two of these in parallel for more current?
DC-DC converters cannot simply be paralleled unless they are specifically designed for parallel operation with active current sharing. Without current sharing, one converter will take more of the load than the other, potentially overloading one while the other idles. If you need more than 240W at 24V, either select a higher-power converter or separate your 24V loads into independent circuits, each powered by its own converter. Do not connect the outputs of two converters together.
How do I test this converter before connecting expensive equipment?
Connect a suitable DC power source (12V battery or bench supply) to the input through a fuse. With no load connected to the output, measure the output voltage — it should read very close to 24V DC. Then connect a known load (a 24V automotive bulb of 21W or similar, or a power resistor) and verify the output voltage remains stable. Gradually increase the load while monitoring voltage and case temperature. This bench test confirms basic functionality before committing the converter to a critical installation.
