Industrial Cooling Maintenance FAQ

Can the SP-4L be installed in a fanless (passive) configuration for PLCs? No. The dense fin stack of the SP-4L is specifically designed to be paired with its high-static-pressure slim PWM fan. Removing the fan in an attempt to make it a passive heatsink will drastically reduce its thermal capacity, likely causing the PLC processor to overheat under heavy industrial loads.
What should I do if the PWM fan fails in a dusty factory environment? In environments with high particulate matter, standard fan bearings can seize. If the fan fails, the control board will usually trigger a thermal alarm as the heat pipes alone cannot dissipate the load. You should replace the fan immediately. For heavy dust environments, consider installing a filtered intake on the main control cabinet to extend the cooler's lifespan.
Does the orientation of the heat pipes matter in a vertically mounted PLC cabinet? Yes. Due to the internal capillary action of the sintered copper heat pipes, installing the motherboard so that the U-bend of the heat pipes is pointing completely downward (against gravity) can slightly reduce cooling efficiency. For optimal phase-change thermal transfer, orient the heat pipes horizontally if the motherboard is mounted vertically on a DIN rail.
