What Is the Linshang LS108H UV-Vis Spectrum Transmission Meter?
The Linshang LS108H is a handheld UV-Vis spectrophotometer designed for rapid, non-destructive measurement of light transmission through transparent and semi-transparent materials. It covers the ultraviolet (365nm), visible (380-760nm peak at 550nm), and infrared (940nm) spectra, making it a versatile tool for evaluating window tint, architectural glass, automotive film, acrylic and polycarbonate sheets, laminated glass, and optical filters. Unlike traditional bench-top spectrophotometers, the LS108H uses a dual-beam optical path design: one beam passes through the test sample while a reference beam measures the source directly, automatically compensating for light source drift and delivering repeatable results within seconds. The instrument features a built-in magnetic alignment jig that sandwiches the sample between the emitter and receiver heads, ensuring consistent measurement geometry without the need for a darkroom or optical bench.
In short: A portable three-wavelength (UV/Visible/IR) transmission meter for quickly testing glass tint, window film, and transparent material light-blocking performance across UV, visible, and infrared spectra. Supplied new by koeed.com.

For accurate results, clean both the sample surface and the instrument's optical windows before measurement. Dust, fingerprints, or condensation on either surface will scatter light and produce erroneously low transmission readings. Perform a zero calibration in air (no sample) before each measurement session.
Typical Applications
-
Automotive Window Tint Inspection: Verify that installed window film meets legal visible light transmission (VLT) requirements for front side windows and windshields
-
Architectural Glass Quality Control: Test low-E coated glass, double-glazed units, and laminated safety glass for specified visible and IR transmission values
-
Solar Film Manufacturing: In-line quality check of produced window film rolls for UV rejection rate, visible transmission, and IR heat rejection
-
Eyewear and Optical Filter Testing: Measure UV blocking performance of sunglasses, safety glasses, and camera lens filters
-
Plastic and Acrylic Sheet Inspection: Verify UV stabilizer content and optical clarity of polycarbonate, acrylic (PMMA), and PET sheets for signage, glazing, and display applications
Frequently Asked Questions
How thick can the test sample be for accurate measurement?
The LS108H's magnetic jig accommodates samples up to approximately 20mm thick. The measurement principle is transmission-based, so the sample must transmit enough light at each wavelength for the detector to register above its noise floor. For heavily tinted or opaque materials (e.g., dark privacy glass, metal-coated films), the instrument will display very low transmission values or indicate an out-of-range condition. The instrument works best with materials that transmit at least 5% of incident light at the measured wavelengths.
Does this meter measure haze or clarity, not just transmission?
The LS108H measures total light transmission (the percentage of incident light that passes through the sample in the forward direction). It does not separately measure haze (wide-angle scattered light) or clarity (narrow-angle scattered light) as defined by ASTM D1003. For haze and clarity measurements, you would need a dedicated haze meter or an integrating-sphere spectrophotometer. However, for most window tint and glass inspection tasks, total transmission is the primary metric of interest.
Can this test curved automotive glass, or only flat samples?
The magnetic clamping jig is designed for flat or gently curved surfaces. For moderately curved automotive side windows, the jig can be positioned on a relatively flat section of the glass. For highly curved areas (near the edges of a windshield), the emitter and receiver heads can be used without the magnetic jig by manually holding them aligned on opposite sides of the glass. Manual alignment requires a steady hand -- expect slightly more measurement variation (1-2%) compared to jig-assisted readings.
How often does the LS108H need calibration?
Linshang recommends annual factory calibration for instruments used in regulated or quality-assurance applications. Between calibrations, perform a daily zero check in air (no sample in the optical path) -- the visible transmission should read 100% within the instrument's specified accuracy. If the zero reading drifts significantly, clean the optical windows with a lens cloth and isopropyl alcohol. If drift persists, the instrument may need recalibration. The LS108H does not support user calibration; it must be returned to Linshang or an authorized service center.
Can this instrument test the UV protection of sunscreen applied to a transparent substrate?
While the LS108H can measure UV transmission through sunscreen-coated quartz slides or UV-transparent film, it is not a substitute for an SPF-rated UV analyzer designed specifically for sunscreen testing (which follows regulatory protocols like ISO 24443). The LS108H's 365nm UV wavelength is representative of the UVA spectrum; it does not measure UVB (280-315nm) separately. For sunscreen development and quality control, use instruments specifically validated for in-vitro SPF/UVA-PF determination.
