Beckhoff AM8043-0H21-0000 Synchronous Servo Motor — 4.0 kW, EtherCAT-Ready, Multi-Turn Encoder
Beckhoff · AM8043 Series · 0H21 Variant · 480V Class · In Stock
The AM8043-0H21-0000 is a 4.0 kW-class permanent-magnet synchronous servo motor from
Beckhoff
— the German PC-based control and EtherCAT pioneer whose
AM8000 motor family
is engineered as a native fit for the TwinCAT / AX5000 / AX8000 / iX drive ecosystem. The
0H21 code indicates a 480 V winding, keyway shaft, M23 power and feedback
connector, and a multi-turn absolute encoder (OCT / OCT-rel / BiSS-C / EnDat 2.2 selectable),
making this motor the default pick for high-precision EtherCAT motion axes in
factory automation
lines that already run a Beckhoff controller.

Application Scenarios — Where the AM8043-0H21-0000 Fits
The 4.0 kW power class is the “workhorse” zone of a typical EtherCAT motion line —
big enough for direct-drive conveyors, mid-size gantries and rotary tables, small enough to
run dozens of axes from a single Beckhoff CX / IPC controller. The 0H21 multi-turn absolute
encoder eliminates homing routines after power-cycle, which is critical for
packaging machinery,
converting lines and battery stacking cells where re-homing is a production stop.
-
Machine tool & CNC retrofit — axis drives for milling, turning and
grinding centres running on TwinCAT NC, including direct replacement paths from
Siemens SIMOTICS 1FK7
or Fanuc βiS
motors when migrating to PC-based control.
-
Packaging & converting — horizontal flow wrappers, vertical form
fill & seal, label applicators and film/foil winders needing constant web tension and
quick acceleration profiles.
-
Semiconductor & electronics assembly — PCB routing, pick-and-place
indexers, wire bonders and SMT conveyors where IP65 sealing and absolute multi-turn feedback
keep the line calibrated across shift changes.
-
Robotics & delta pickers — paired with
Yaskawa-class
gearheads or as a Beckhoff-native alternative to
Mitsubishi
MR-J4 and Omron
R88D in compact delta and SCARA cells.
-
Pharma, medical & lab automation — filling lines, vial handling,
diagnostic reagent dispensing; the F-class insulation and clean IP65 housing suit
washdown-adjacent enclosures.
-
Battery cell & module assembly — stacking, winding and tab welding
where deterministic EtherCAT cycle times matter more than peak torque.
-
Plastics & twin-screw extruder — main screw drive, melt pump and
downstream puller rolls in sheet / film extrusion.
-
General motion retrofit — drop-in upgrade from older
Allen-Bradley
MPL/MPM, Schneider
Lexium 32, Panasonic
Minas A5, or KEYENCE
SV servo installations that are being modernized onto an EtherCAT backplane.

Integration & Wiring Notes
The AM8043-0H21-0000 is designed as a drop-in member of the Beckhoff One Cable / Two Cable
topology. On the 0H21 variant the power lines run through a dedicated M23 size 1.5 power
connector, while the feedback lines (encoder + thermal sensor) share a second M23 connector.
A 480 V supply rail and a regen resistor (mounted on the drive) are mandatory; never
back-feed 230 V into a 0H21 winding or you will saturate the core and trip the drive on
I²t almost immediately.
-
Drive pairing. Match the AM8043-0H21 to an AX5000 (1-channel) or AX8000 /
AX8100 (2-channel) servo drive sized for 4.0 kW continuous. For multi-axis cells the iX
series allows stacking in tight cabinets.
-
Encoder feedback. Verify the drive parameter “Encoder type” matches the
motor nameplate: OCT, OCT-rel (relay), BiSS-C or EnDat 2.2. Mismatched protocol is the
most common cause of an F-error on first power-up.
-
Cable management. Use Beckhoff pre-assembled motor cables
(e.g. ZK4500-xxxx-yyyy) with length-coded part numbers; cable length above 25 m
degrades the OCT signal integrity, and above 50 m EnDat 2.2 is preferred over OCT.
-
EtherCAT topology. Wire the drive as a standard EtherCAT slave on the
CX / IPC controller; set the cycle time to 250 µs or 500 µs for the 4.0 kW axis
class. TwinCAT NC PTP or NC I is the recommended motion library.
-
Protective earth & EMC. Ground the motor body to the cabinet PE rail
with a short, low-impedance strap; the IP65 housing is not a substitute for chassis
grounding.
-
Thermal sensor. The 0H21 winding carries a KTY or PTC element
(declared in the nameplate) — wire it back to the drive’s T-motor input so the
drive can enforce F-class winding protection.
Confirming that the right feedback protocol and connector family are in the cabinet before
shipment eliminates the most common commissioning delays. Cross-check against the

Installation & Commissioning Tips
Field experience with AM8043-class axes in TwinCAT cells tends to surface the same handful
of setup steps; the list below is the short version that saves a half-day of bench time.
-
Mechanical alignment. Use a flexible or bellows coupling sized for the
motor’s rated torque; radial load on the keyway shaft must stay inside the catalogue
limit (see Beckhoff AM8043 datasheet, “Shaft load” section).
-
Encoder zero-set. With a multi-turn absolute encoder the zero position is
set in TwinCAT NC and stored in the encoder non-volatile memory. Re-zero only after
mechanical disassembly, not on every maintenance cycle.
-
Current loop & auto-tuning. Run the Beckhoff “Identify motor” /
“Commutation find” wizard first, then commit the gain set. Skipping this step and
pasting gains from a different motor lot is a frequent cause of overshoot during
directional reversal.
-
Regen resistor sizing. For high-inertia loads (e.g. film winders, large
rotary tables) oversize the regen resistor on the drive; the AM8043 can dump up to ~3x
rated power during emergency stops.
-
EtherCAT diagnostics. Watch the “Frame Error Counter” tab in TwinCAT
during the first hour of operation. Any climbing counter is a sign of marginal cable
shielding, not a motor fault.
-
Lubrication & bearings. AM8043 uses sealed-for-life bearings as standard;
do not re-grease. Replace the motor as a unit at end-of-bearing life rather than
attempting field bearing swaps.
-
Storage & handling. If the motor is in storage longer than 12 months,
power it up through a current-limited supply and run the rotor at low speed for ~10
minutes to redistribute bearing grease before full load operation.
For engineers who prefer a checklist, mirror this section against your project’s FAT
(Factory Acceptance Test) sheet so the same steps are run on every Beckhoff axis in the
cabinet, not only the AM8043.
Procurement, Warranty & Lead Time
The AM8043-0H21-0000 is kept in active stock at KOEED. We treat Beckhoff servo motors as a
core line, not a side SKU, because the AM8000 family is widely deployed in the
factory automation
retrofit market. We also stock the matching pre-assembled motor and feedback cables
(One Cable and two-cable variants), regen resistors, and filter modules so a single BOM
line can be shipped as a complete sub-assembly.
-
Warranty. 12-month limited warranty on new units against manufacturing
defect, honoured worldwide.
-
Lead time. In-stock units ship within 1–3 business days from
Shenzhen / Hong Kong via DHL, FedEx or UPS; quote turnaround within 24 hours on
business days.
-
BOM quotation. Send a full instrument list — drives, motors, cables,
I/O, controllers — and we will quote the lot in one reply. Mixing the AM8043 with
Allen-Bradley
ControlLogix,
Siemens
SIMATIC, or
Mitsubishi
MELSEC parts in the same BOM is normal and supported.
-
Obsolete / hard-to-find. If the 0H21 variant is end-of-life or you need a
different winding code (e.g. 0H20 for 230 V), we will source the equivalent AM8043 variant
or recommend a cross-reference from the AM8500 / AM8800 families.
-
Authenticity. All Beckhoff units are sourced through audited channels
and bench-tested before shipment.
