Keyence KV-1000 Battery OP-51604 — 3V PLC Lithium Replacement
KEYENCE · KV-1000 Series · SRAM Backup Battery · MRO Consumable
The OP-51604 is the factory-specified 3V primary lithium battery for the
Keyence KV-1000 series
PLC platform. It backs up the CPU’s SRAM, retentive data registers, and ladder program memory when main
power is removed — so an unplanned shutdown does not wipe recipe data, counter values or production counters.
As an MRO consumable it is regularly stocked by maintenance teams running
factory automation
lines, machine builders, and vision inspection cells where KV-1000, KV-700 and KV-3000 controllers are still in
service. Sourcing through KOEED removes the long lead times that come with Japanese OEM channels.

The OP-51604 is purpose-built for the KV-1000 platform and is electrically compatible with most KV-series CPUs
that share the same battery connector footprint, including
KV-1000,
KV-700,
KV-3000,
KV-5000 and
KV-7000
controllers. KOEED keeps OP-51604 on the shelf as a routine MRO consumable, alongside the
PLC battery family
for Allen-Bradley,
Siemens,
Mitsubishi and
Omron controllers.
Application Scenarios & Where It Fits
The OP-51604 is deployed wherever a Keyence KV-1000 series PLC must retain process state through power cycles.
Common fit-for-purpose scenarios include:
- Automotive body-in-white and assembly cells, where the KV-1000 holds torque counters, fault history and recipe numbers between shifts.
- Electronics SMT lines and
factory automation
cells that re-start every weekend and must not lose feeder recipes or production counts.
- Vision inspection stations pairing a KV-1000 with a
Keyence CV-5000 / XG-8000
vision system, where job numbers and threshold values live in the PLC’s retentive memory.
- Packaging and labelling machinery that counts batch totals and must survive E-stops without losing the batch.
- Process skids (water treatment, food & beverage) where a Keyence PLC holds setpoints and totalizer values during a power outage.
- Long-life machines still running KV-1000 hardware from the 2010s, where the original battery has reached end-of-life and
recent KOEED restocks
are the fastest replacement route.
Adjacent plant floors typically mix PLC brands: a single line can run
Fanuc CNC,
Yaskawa Σ-7 servo drives,
Schneider Magelis HMIs,
Panasonic FP PLCs and a
Keyence KV-1000 battery
on the same panel — so a
full BOM quote
covering the entire machine often makes sense.
Integration & Wiring Notes
The OP-51604 is a self-contained battery pack, not a wired component, but a few integration points are worth flagging
for the maintenance engineer planning a replacement window:
-
Connector keying: the battery holder on the KV-1000 CPU is keyed — the OP-51604 connector can only be installed in one orientation. Do not force-fit a generic CR17335 cell where a holder is specified.
-
Battery-low alarm: Keyence KV series raise a “BATT LOW” flag in the system area when the cell voltage drops below threshold. After replacement, clear the flag from the
PLC error code database
procedure and re-arm the CPU.
-
Retention period: SRAM retention is specified at full cell voltage at 25 °C. High ambient temperatures (above 45 °C inside a control cabinet) shorten the effective service life — the same caveat applies to
Allen-Bradley
1756-BATM and
Siemens
S7-400 backup batteries.
-
Hot-swap behaviour: the OP-51604 is designed to be replaced with main power applied for a short window. Hold the replacement cell ready and complete the swap within the time the Keyence manual specifies (typically under 30 seconds) to avoid SRAM loss.
-
Disposal: primary lithium cells are subject to local transport and disposal regulations. KOEED can advise on return programmes on a per-shipment basis through
Moritta@KOEED.COM.
Installation & Commissioning Tips
Replacing an OP-51604 is a 5-minute maintenance task, but doing it methodically prevents the “lost program”
call-out. Use the following sequence:
-
Back up the project first. Connect KV Studio / KV Builder to the CPU over USB or Ethernet and upload the current ladder program and register comments to a project file. This is your safety net even though the cell is supposed to retain the program.
-
Note the BATT LED state on the KV-1000 front panel before opening the cabinet. A red or flashing BATT indicator confirms the cell is the failure cause; a green LED means you are doing a scheduled preventive replacement.
-
Power state. Where possible, keep the PLC powered during the swap. If the cell has already failed, expect a brief CPU restart and accept the program will be reloaded from the upload in step 1.
-
Remove and seat the new OP-51604. Pull the old pack straight out of the holder, observe the connector key, and seat the new pack until the retaining clip clicks. Do not bend the contact pins.
-
Clear the BATT LOW flag from the KV Studio system area, verify the BATT LED is solid green, and re-cycle main power once to confirm the program and retentive data are intact.
-
Log the swap in the machine’s maintenance record with the cell serial and date — most plants use a 5-year planned replacement interval, similar to the cycle used for
Mitsubishi
Q-series batteries and
Omron
CJ-series cells.
For multi-PLC panels, building a small on-site spares kit of two or three OP-51604 cells — and rotating them into
the annual maintenance window — is cheaper than a single unplanned line stoppage. Ask KOEED about bulk
