Integration & Wiring Notes

The BT50-OMP400 itself is a mechanical holder — it carries no electrical signals. All probe signaling flows through the OMP400’s internal batteries and the Renishaw OMM (or OMI) optical receiver mounted on the machine envelope. The receiver converts the probe’s modulated infrared pulses into a discrete skip / probe-triggered signal that the CNC interprets as a probing event. The receiver’s M-code output is wired to the controller’s fast input; for Fanuc, Siemens and Mitsubishi CNC platforms this is normally a dedicated skip input (e.g. X4.7 on Fanuc 0i-MF / 30i-B, DI 16 on SINUMERIK 840D sl, or the SPI input on Mitsubishi M80). The OMP400’s on/off state is selected by the same infrared beam, which doubles as a start-of-block confirmation.

In a typical cell, the BT50-OMP400 holder is loaded in the same tool magazine as cutting tools, and the OMP400 is treated as just another tool with a defined length and diameter offset. When the OMP400 is called by the part program the spindle orients, the holder enters the spindle, and the controller switches on the optical receiver ahead of the probing move. After measurement, the receiver is turned off and the OMP400 can stay in the spindle or be returned to the magazine. When the OMP400 is not fitted, the BT50-OMP400 holder can be used as a BT50 “blank” storage position to keep the magazine balanced, but it must be cleaned and the stylus guarded before any cutting move.

Designers using Omron CP1 / CJ2 PLCs or Schneider Modicon M340 / M580 to read the probing result into a line-side MES usually latch the skip signal through a high-speed counter module (e.g. Omron CP1H-XA or Schneider BMXEH C-200) and tag the timestamp alongside the workpiece serial number. For motion-heavy cells driven by Yaskawa Σ-7 or Panasonic FP7 PLCs, the OMP400 reading is typically used to feed back into the G-code work offset table, not into the PLC directly.

Installation & Commissioning Tips

  • Clean the BT50 taper every time. Wipe both the spindle taper and the holder taper with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol — swarf under the taper face is the single most common cause of poor run-out and probe noise.
  • Use the correct pull-stud. Match the pull-stud (e.g. MAS-BT45° or CAT-style, per machine spec) and torque it to the machine maker’s spec. An under-torqued pull-stud lets the OMP400 shift axially and ruins repeatability.
  • Set the tool-length offset carefully. Touch the OMP400 stylus with the same method you would for a cutting tool and re-measure offset every time the stylus is changed. Renishaw’s recommended stylus length should be respected to keep the trigger force predictable.
  • Verify optical line of sight. The OMM / OMI receiver must have a clear IR view of the spindle window. With a 5-axis head, check probe triggering at every head orientation used in the part program — blind spots are common at A-axis ±90°.
  • Calibrate the probe on the machine. Run a full Renishaw datum sphere calibration after installation and again after any spindle, ball-screw or head collision event. Store calibration in the controller’s permanent offset table.
  • Plan battery changes. OMP400 batteries last many shifts but not forever. Add a low-battery M-code to the part program and log battery state to your KOEED AI Diagnostic Tool workflow if you have one.
  • Train operators on collision recovery. A crashed stylus is the #1 cause of in-cycle measurement drift. Replace the stylus as a complete assembly; do not bend and re-use.
