Huntsman Araldite AV138 M + HV998-1 Epoxy Adhesive Kit (1 kg + 0.4 kg, Total 1.4 kg)
Huntsman Advanced Materials · Two-Component Epoxy · Structural Bonding · In stock
The Araldite AV138 M / HV998-1 kit is a Huntsman two-component structural epoxy system supplied as a 1 kg resin can plus a 0.4 kg amine hardener can (total 1.4 kg). AV138 M is a low-viscosity, general-purpose epoxy resin; HV998-1 is the matching amine curing agent. The cured system delivers high bond strength on metals, ceramics, glass, rigid plastics, wood, and composites, and is rated for continuous service from −55 °C to +120 °C with a glass transition around 85–95 °C. KOEED supplies this Araldite kit as part of our industrial-maintenance consumables lineup, the same channel our customers use to source

2. Application Scenarios / Where It Fits
Araldite AV138 M + HV998-1 is a general-purpose structural adhesive and potting compound, so it lands well in any industrial-automation maintenance cell where you are repairing the hardware that sits between a PLC and a moving axis. Typical use cases include:
-
Sensor and encoder housing potting — sealing proximity switches, photo eyes, and KEYENCE vision-system cable glands against oil and coolant ingress on machine tools.
-
Motor-magnet and rotor assembly bonding — magnet fixturing on servo rotors from Mitsubishi MR-J4, Yaskawa Σ-7, and Panasonic MINAS A5/A6 families.
-
Transformer coil and inductor encapsulation — low-viscosity penetration into windings on SMPS units feeding Schneider Modicon and Allen-Bradley PowerFlex drive DC buses.
-
CNC fixture and way-cover repair — bonding fiberglass wear strips, chip pans, and way-cover brackets on Fanuc 0i / 30i machining centers.
-
Metal-to-metal and ceramic-to-metal structural bonding — bracket-to-frame, terminal block, and heatsink-to-chassis joints inside Siemens SIMATIC and Omron SYSMAC cabinets.
-
Composite layup and fiberglass patch repair — field-level repair of robot end-effector covers, cable-carrier tow arms, and protective enclosures on automated cells.
-
Chemical-resistant coating — thin film on sumps, drip trays, and chemical-dosing skids in process-control panels.
3. Integration & Wiring Notes (Mixing Ratio, Pot Life, Cure)
Although this kit is a chemical consumable rather than a wired module, the "integration" workflow is just as critical. Treat the resin and hardener the way you would treat a two-wire sensor pair: respect the ratio, respect the timing, and the bond line will hold rated load.
-
Mix ratio: 100 parts by weight AV138 M to 40 parts by weight HV998-1. A kitchen scale accurate to 1 g is enough for the 1.4 kg kit. Deviation beyond ± 5 % will leave unreacted amine (sticky surface) or unreacted epoxy (brittle, low Tg).
-
Pot life: 60 – 90 minutes at 25 °C for a 100 g mix. Larger batches exotherm and shrink pot life — mix only what you can pour in 20 minutes. Cold kits (chilled to 10 °C) extend pot life but must be warmed to room temperature before application to avoid crystallisation.
-
Cure schedule: Pick one and stick to it. 24 h at room temperature gives full handling strength for non-structural bonds; 4 h at 60 °C or 2 h at 80 °C drives the cure to the 85–95 °C Tg window for high-temperature service. Heat-cure is mandatory if the bond sits near a Yaskawa Σ-V servo or a Fanuc αi amplifier heat sink.
-
Viscosity management: The 3.5–5.5 Pa·s resin wets fiberglass and fine wire bundles well. Do not thin with generic solvents — use only manufacturer-approved diluents, or the Tg and chemical resistance will drop.
-
Health & safety: Uncured amine hardener is a sensitiser. Wear nitrile gloves and work in a ventilated area; cured epoxy is biologically inert. Refer to the SDS before first use.
4. Installation & Commissioning Tips (Surface Prep, Bonding Procedure)
A two-part epoxy fails at the interface, not in the glue line, so surface preparation is at least 70 % of the result. Walk through the procedure in this order:
-
Degrease. Wipe both faces with acetone or isopropyl alcohol; let them flash off completely. Skip this on oily production-floor steel and the bond will be the weakest part of the assembly.
-
Mechanically abrade. 80 – 120 grit aluminium-oxide paper gives the right profile. Glass-bead blasting is preferred for aluminium and stainless housings around KEYENCE laser-sensor mounts.
-
Re-clean. Acetone wipe again after abrasion. Do not touch the surface with bare hands — skin oils are the classic contamination source.
-
Pre-fit dry. Confirm clamp pressure, shim stack, and gap (< 0.2 mm ideal; up to 1.0 mm acceptable for gap-filling AV138 M).
-
Mix and degas (if possible). Stir for 3 minutes, scraping the walls and bottom; vacuum-degas for 5 minutes at 50 mbar to remove entrained air before potting transformer coils or sensor housings.
-
Apply and clamp. A 0.05 – 0.15 mm bond line is the sweet spot. Over-thick layers shrink and crack; under-thick layers starve the joint.
-
Cure. Room-temperature 24 h for shop-floor repair; 60–80 °C oven cure for production line and high-temperature service. Do not load the joint before full cure.
-
Document. For OEM builds, record the batch number, mix ratio by weight, ambient temperature, and cure schedule on the build sheet — same discipline as commissioning a new Siemens SIMATIC or Omron CP1E rack.
