How do I wire an NPN (QL-1805NA) sensor to a PLC?

Standard 3-wire DC color codes apply: Brown connects to the positive power supply (+24VDC), Blue connects to the negative/ground (0V). The Black wire is your NPN signal out. Because it is NPN, the black wire will output a 0V (ground) signal when metal is detected. Ensure your PLC input card is configured as "Sourcing" (Common terminal tied to +24V) to accept this NPN signal.

The LED indicator turns on when metal is near, but the PLC isn't registering the input. Why?

This is a classic NPN vs. PNP mismatch. If the sensor LED activates, the sensor is working. However, if your PLC input card is wired for PNP (Common tied to 0V), it is expecting a +24V signal, but the QL-1805NA is providing a 0V signal. You must either re-wire the PLC input block's common, use an interposing relay, or swap the sensor for a PNP variant (e.g., QL-1805PA).

Can this sensor detect plastic or wood?

No. The QL-1805NA is an inductive proximity sensor, meaning it generates an electromagnetic field and only detects metal objects that disrupt that field via eddy currents. For plastic, wood, or liquids, you would need a capacitive or photoelectric sensor.
