The NI CFP-2220 is a rugged industrial Compact FieldPoint-class logic controller from National Instruments (now part of Emerson NI Test & Measurement). With a 200 MHz AMD Geode-class x86 processor, 32 MB DRAM and 64 MB CompactFlash storage, the cFP-2220 acts as the deterministic brain of a modular distributed I/O rack and is fully programmable in LabVIEW and LabVIEW Real-Time. It ships with RS-232, RS-485 and 10/100 Ethernet on-board, accepts any mix of cFP-AI / cFP-AO / cFP-DI / cFP-DO / cFP-TC / cFP-RTD I/O modules on the backplane, and runs cool on a single 11–30 V DC field supply. KOEED keeps legacy cFP-2220 stock available for in-place repair of existing Compact FieldPoint installations that long pre-date CompactDAQ and CompactRIO.

Application Scenarios — Where It Fits

The cFP-2220 was designed for distributed, deterministic data-acquisition and supervisory control in environments where a full rack PLC is overkill but a stand-alone data logger is not enough. The controller's three on-board serial / Ethernet ports let it serve simultaneously as a node-level supervisory controller and as an Ethernet-attached data publisher. Typical fits include:

• Distributed factory automation I/O nodes aggregating analog & digital signals at the cell level
• Continuous process monitoring (water & wastewater, chemical, food & beverage) alongside PLCs from Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron or Schneider
• End-of-line functional test stands on automotive and CNC production lines (often alongside Fanuc and Yaskawa motion)
• Structural health & vibration monitoring on bridges, dams and large rotating machinery (paired with KEYENCE laser sensors)
• Machine condition monitoring and predictive-maintenance retrofits on legacy lines built around Allen-Bradley SLC / PLC-5 hardware
• OEM test equipment from Panasonic-line builders that need to log analog values from sensors on a small footprint
• Oil & gas well-pad and pipeline SCADA RTU outstations running LabVIEW Real-Time

If you are starting a brand-new project in 2026, NI itself will steer you to CompactRIO or cDAQ-913x controllers instead. The cFP-2220 makes most sense when you are keeping an existing Compact FieldPoint rack alive on a production line that simply cannot be re-engineered, or when you need an exact form-fit-function drop-in for a controller that failed in the field.

Integration & Wiring Notes

The cFP-2220 is a networkable controller but it is not a backplane power supply — every Compact FieldPoint bank needs at least one cFP-PS-1200 / cFP-PS-1300 power supply module to feed the rack, and one or more cFP-CB-1 / cFP-CB-3 connector blocks to land field wiring. Plan your BOM around three logical groups: controller, power & backplane, and I/O + wiring.

Installation & Commissioning Tips

• Mount first, then power. Compact FieldPoint is DIN-rail mounted; leave at least 25 mm of clearance top and bottom for airflow. The cFP-2220 itself dissipates only a few watts, but a fully-populated 8-slot bank with thermocouple and RTD modules needs convection space.
• Stage the rack off-line. Bench-test the controller, power supply and I/O modules with a 24 V DC lab supply before mounting. Confirm FieldPoint Explorer discovers the controller and that you can read a known analog input before shipping to site.
• Snapshot the CompactFlash. After the first successful deploy, image the 64 MB CompactFlash card — it contains the LabVIEW RT image plus your application. Label and store the image so a swap-out card is always a 5-minute recovery.
• Watch the watchdog. The cFP-2220 has a hardware watchdog that you can wire to a fail-safe output. Configure it in LabVIEW Real-Time before the controller is trusted to drive a process.
• Grounding and shielding. Use shielded twisted pair for thermocouple and RTD extensions, ground the shield at the cFP-CB end only, and bond the DIN rail to plant ground with a dedicated strap. This is the single biggest source of intermittent noise on cFP-TC-120 / cFP-RTD-122 banks.
• Time sync. Point the controller at an NTP server on commissioning day; LabVIEW RT logs are far more useful when the timestamps align with the rest of the plant (SCADA, MES, historians).
