Parker VB42-Q-NQ-5 12025323 — 4-Way 2-Position Hydraulic Directional Control Valve
Parker Hannifin · VB / VB42 Series · D03 / NG6 Subplate · 1 PC
The Parker VB42-Q-NQ-5 (P/N 12025323) is a 4-way, 2-position hydraulic directional control valve from Parker Hannifin's VB / VB42 series. The "42" designates the size — NFPA D03 / Cetop 3 / NG6 mounting pattern — making it the standard subplate-mount directional valve for low-to-medium flow hydraulic circuits. With a 3000 psi (210 bar) working pressure rating and 10–25 L/min nominal flow, it is the workhorse directional control element on hydraulic presses, machine tools, plastic injection molding machines, die-casting cells, mobile hydraulic skids and production-line fixtures.

Key Technical Specifications & Overview
The VB42 is the production-proven member of the Parker VB family. The "-Q" denotes the spool configuration (typically 3-position tandem-center for press circuits), "-NQ" specifies the NPT porting option, and the "-5" refers to the manual hand-lever override arrangement. The valve mounts on a standard D03 / NG6 subplate and is also offered in SAE and BSP ported variants — letting it drop into a wide range of existing hydraulic manifolds without rework. Like the broader VB / VBY family, it shares spare spools, seal kits and solenoid coils with the rest of the series, simplifying long-term maintenance.

Application Scenarios & Where It Fits
The VB42-Q-NQ-5 is designed for hydraulic subcircuits where flow and pressure stay inside the 25 L/min / 210 bar envelope. It is most commonly specified as the directional element that controls the clamp, ejector, core-pull or slide movement on discrete-machine circuits — the same machine that the controller (an
Allen-Bradley
CompactLogix,
Siemens S7-1200 or
Mitsubishi MELSEC iQ-R) commands through proportional or solenoid pilots.
-
Hydraulic presses & stamping cells — directional control of clamp, blank-holder and ejector circuits on small-to-medium tonnage presses.
-
Plastic injection molding machines — clamp open/close, ejector, sprue break and core-pull directional valves (often paired with Omron CJ / CP-series machine controllers).
-
Die-casting & foundry cells — spray, die-close and shot-end directional control on cold-chamber and hot-chamber machines.
-
Machine tools & production-line fixtures — clamping, indexing, tool-change and work-holding circuits; pairs naturally with Fanuc CNC fronts and Yaskawa Σ-7 servo axes.
-
Mobile hydraulics & skids — compact utility directional valve for service vehicles, test stands and field-repair skids.
-
Test rigs & hydraulic fixtures — manually overridden circuits used in QA / endurance stands where the operator needs direct mechanical control.
-
Vision-inspection jigs — parts-present pneumatic / hydraulic clamping on KEYENCE CV / XG vision cells, often co-located with Panasonic FP-series PLCs.
-
Process-line valve actuation — directional control for on/off hydraulic actuators where the higher-level control is a Schneider Modicon M340 / M580 PLC.
Integration & Wiring Notes
The VB42-Q-NQ-5 ships as a manually-actuated directional body. To convert it to a fully machine-controlled element, drop in a standard VB-family solenoid coil (DC 24 V is the most common factory-floor rail, AC 110/220 V variants exist). The coil plugs onto the solenoid nut on either end of the spool and is wired into the discrete output of a PLC — for example the 24 VDC outputs of a 1756-OB16E on a
ControlLogix rack, a 6ES7 322 on a
S7-300 / S7-1500, or the relay / transistor outputs of a
MELSEC Q / iQ-R CPU. Always fuse the coil per Parker datasheet, and put a flyback diode on the DC coil driver to protect the PLC output.
Hydraulic integration: the VB42 mounts on a D03 / NG6 subplate. Use NPT-to-flare or NPT-to-ORB adapters when the rest of the machine is on SAE flare fittings — do not mix thread standards on the same port. The work ports (A and B) feed the actuator (typically a double-acting cylinder or hydraulic motor); the pressure port (P) ties to the pump line through a 25-µm return filter; the tank port (T) returns directly to reservoir through a cooler. Keep the suction line short and the return line generously sized — back-pressure on T is the single most common cause of sluggish VB-family valves.
Safety wiring: when the valve drives a press or clamp, interlock the solenoid enable through a safety relay or safety-PLC output (Allen-Bradley GuardLogix, Siemens F-CPU, Mitsubishi QS-WS, Omron NX-Safety) so that an E-stop or guard-open event de-energises the coil and the spring offset returns the spool to its fail-safe position. The mechanical hand-lever override on the "-5" suffix lets the operator force-shift the valve during commissioning or maintenance, even with the coil de-energised.
Installation & Commissioning Tips
-
Verify the subplate pattern. The VB42 is a D03 / NG6 valve — do not try to bolt it onto a D05 / NG10 subplate (the bolt circle and port spacing differ). Use genuine Parker subplates or equivalents machined to NFPA T3.5.1.
-
Confirm the spool code before powering up. "-Q" indicates a specific center condition. Wrong spool code is the #1 cause of "the machine drifts down" complaints — never substitute by appearance.
-
Flush the system cold. New installations should be flushed at low pressure (<30 bar) for 20–30 minutes with the VB-family valve bypassed, so any swarf from pipe-work does not score the spool.
-
Check torque on the mounting bolts. Use a calibrated wrench and the Parker-specified torque (typically 35–45 Nm for M6 studs on a D03 subplate). Uneven torque distorts the body and causes internal leakage.
-
Bleed air from the actuator side. After installation, fully extend and retract the actuator 5–10 times against no load to bleed trapped air through the bleeders at the cylinder.
-
Use clean oil only. ISO 4406 18/16/13 or better. Many VB42 failures in the field are actually contamination-induced spool sticking.
-
Cross-check with the controller logic. Match the PLC sequence (an Omron CJ2M, Schneider Modicon M340 or Allen-Bradley CompactLogix is a typical host) to the valve's center condition — you may need to invert a solenoid output in ladder logic if the cylinder moves opposite to the HMI button.
-
Test the manual override before energising the coil. The "-5" hand lever must shift smoothly through detents; if it does not, the body has been damaged in transit and should not be installed.
