MITSUBISHI · MELSERVO J2S / J3 / J4 · HF-KP Series · 200 V · 200 W · In Stock
The Mitsubishi HF-KP23JK-S8 is a 200 W class, low-inertia, small-capacity AC servo motor from the
Mitsubishi
MELSERVO J2 Super / J3 / J4 family. It pairs naturally with the
MR-J2S-20A / 20B,
MR-J3-20A and
MR-J4-20A servo amplifiers,
and ships with the JK (keyway shaft + electromagnetic holding brake) and the -S8
connector / encoder cable lead-out option that most modern SMT, packaging and small-CNC cells expect.
KOEED stocks the HF-KP23JK-S8 side by side with the wider Mitsubishi MELSERVO lineup, plus the eight other named
automation brands engineers combine on a single BOM —
Allen-Bradley,
Siemens,
Omron,
Fanuc,
Schneider,
Yaskawa,
Panasonic and
KEYENCE.

Key Technical Specifications & Overview
The HF-KP23JK-S8 sits in the middle of the
Mitsubishi HF-KP low-inertia
family: 200 V class supply, 200 W rated output, 3000 rpm rated speed, and an incremental 17-bit encoder
(131 072 pulses per revolution) that drives both MR-J2S and MR-J3 / MR-J4 closed-loop positioning. The
JK suffix adds a keyway on the shaft and a 24 V DC electromagnetic holding brake, while the
-S8 suffix denotes the connector / encoder lead-out style that most retrofit cabinets already
wire for.

Application Scenarios & Where It Fits
HF-KP23 small-capacity servos are designed for machines that need fast acceleration, tight positioning, and a
short overall length. The JK (brake + keyway) variant is the workhorse choice wherever the axis has to hold
position when the drive is de-energised, or wherever the driven element is a belt, gear or pinion that keys onto
the shaft instead of clamping. Typical fits include:
-
Semiconductor pick-and-place — X / Y table servo on die bonders and chip shooters where 3000 rpm with sub-millisecond settle is standard.
-
SMT pick-and-place machines — nozzle head indexing, feeder advance and conveyor drive on Yamaha-, Panasonic- and Juki-class platforms.
-
Small CNC mills, routers and lathes — auxiliary axes (tool changer, ATC, fourth axis) where 200 W is plenty but holding torque at stop is mandatory.
-
PCB assembly & dispensing — solder paste printer squeegee, dispenser X/Y, vision-camera positioning stages.
-
Packaging and labelling — film feed, cutter registration, label applicator, shrink-sleeve mandrel on flow wrappers and labelers.
-
Medical / laboratory automation — sample trays, reagent dispensers and vial capping stations that demand a clean, oil-free servo.
-
Textile and printing — dancer / tension control, print-head carriage, web guide and overfeed axes on digital printers.
Across these cells you will often find the HF-KP23JK-S8 sitting next to PLCs and motion controllers from the
other eight KOEED brands — an
Allen-Bradley ControlLogix
or
Siemens S7-1500
as the line controller,
Omron SYSMAC on the safety side,
Fanuc on a CNC island, and
KEYENCE vision at the inspection stage.

Integration & Wiring Notes
The HF-KP23JK-S8 is a 200 V / 200 W motor, so almost all integration choices are driven by the amplifier it
sits behind. The -S8 suffix selects the encoder / power lead-out, which is critical when you are
retrofitting an MR-J2S cabinet, an MR-J3 retrofit or moving forward to MR-J4-20A. Cable sizing, brake supply and
grounding should follow the relevant amplifier manual.
-
Amplifier pairing: MR-J2S-20A or MR-J2S-20B for legacy J2 Super cells, MR-J3-20A for the J3 generation, MR-J4-20A for new builds. The 200 W rating is identical, so no parameter scaling tricks are required.
-
Power cable: Use the Mitsubishi-specified 4-core power cable (U / V / W / PE) matched to the -S8 lead-out. Do not mix -S8 lead-outs with J3 / J4 standard connectors without checking the encoder pin map.
-
Encoder cable: For 17-bit incremental encoders, use a shielded, twisted-pair encoder cable. Keep encoder cable physically separated from power cable by at least 100 mm to avoid coupling noise into the ABZ / Z-phase signals.
-
Brake wiring: The 24 V DC holding brake is released by energising, so on a vertical axis route the brake driver output through the amplifier’s BRK-OFF / forced-stop logic. On an E-stop, the brake must drop out — the amplifier manual defines the SSR / relay sequence.
-
Grounding & shielding: PE from the motor frame must land on the cabinet ground bus. Encoder shield should be grounded at the amplifier end only (single-point ground) to avoid ground-loop ripple on Z.
-
Controller side: Pair the amplifier’s pulse-train / SSCNET link with whatever line controller your plant already runs — Mitsubishi MELSEC iQ-R / Q, Omron CJ2, Siemens S7-1500 or Allen-Bradley CompactLogix all publish the necessary profiles.
-
EMC & cabinet: Install a line filter on the 200 V input, keep the regenerative resistor wiring short, and observe the amplifier manual’s cabinet-ventilation pattern. The motor is IP65 at the shaft seal, but the cable glands and amplifier cooling fan both need clear airflow.

Installation & Commissioning Tips
The HF-KP23JK-S8 is mechanically compact and electrically forgiving, but a small amount of discipline up front
saves many hours of fine-tuning on the bench. KOEED’s engineers use the following sequence whenever they
bench-test a refurbished or freshly arrived unit:
-
Mechanical mount: Bolt the flange to a clean, flat surface; misalignment of more than 0.03 mm between motor and load introduces vibration that shows up as encoder-noise faults (AL.16 / AL.1A) on the amplifier.
-
Shaft loading: The keyway shaft is rated for radial load only with a correctly sized key. Do not hammer couplings onto the shaft — use the threaded end and a coupling puller to avoid encoder bearing damage.
-
Brake air-gap check: After installation, energise the brake circuit and confirm the rotor turns freely. On a vertical axis, release the brake only after the amplifier is enabled, never while the cell is ungrounded.
-
Amplifier autotune: Run the amplifier’s one-touch / auto-tuning routine with the load coupled. For low-inertia loads the default gain is usually fine; for higher-inertia loads, capture the inertia ratio and let the amplifier compute the new gains.
-
Encoder initialisation: On MR-J3 / MR-J4, perform the absolute-position reset (or set the homing sequence for incremental encoders) and verify Z-phase on a slow jog before going to fast moves.
-
First motion test: Command a 1-rev move at 100 rpm in both directions and confirm position error on the amplifier display is within the rated following-error band. Then step up to 3000 rpm and listen for bearing noise.
-
Documentation: Photograph the encoder cable, brake wiring, parameter set (.prm file or amplifier dump) and the model / serial label of the motor. KOEED ships the motor with its label photo so you can match it during the warranty claim.
For multi-axis cells, repeat the autotune per axis rather than copying gains across motors of the same family.
Even two identical HF-KP23JK-S8 units on a 3-axis pick-and-place can differ by 5–10 % in optimal gain because
of cable length, gear ratio and load inertia. The
PLC Analog Calculator
and
Modbus CRC Calculator
are useful sanity-check tools when an amplifier is also a bus node.
Procurement, Warranty & Lead Time
KOEED works RFQ-first because most HF-KP23JK-S8 orders are part of a larger bill of materials that also pulls in
amplifiers, cables, line controllers and sensors from the other eight brands in our lineup. The process is the
same whether the unit is destined for a new SMT line, a semiconductor tool retrofit or a single-machine
replacement:
