This is the complete motor and suction turbine assembly for the Festool CTL 26 E and CTL 36 E mobile dust extractors -- Festool part number 467.3.414. It is a 1200W, 230V AC universal motor with an integrated multi-stage bypass turbine. In a bypass vacuum motor, the cooling air and the working (suction) air follow separate paths through the motor -- the turbine blades move the dirty air, but only clean cooling air passes over the armature and brushes. This design prevents dust and debris from passing through the motor windings, which would cause abrasive wear, short circuits, and brush contamination. This is the heart of the CTL extractor -- the part that generates the suction.

In short: The replacement motor module for a Festool CTL 26 or 36 that has lost suction, makes bearing noise, or trips the breaker on startup -- swapping the entire turbine assembly is faster and more reliable than attempting to rebuild the individual motor components.

Diagnosing Motor vs Control Board vs Other Issues

Motor is likely the problem if: You hear bearing squeal or grinding that changes with speed; the motor hums but does not spin; the circuit breaker trips instantly when the extractor is switched on (short in armature); suction is weak even with a clean filter and empty bag (worn turbine blades or motor running below rated RPM).

Control board is likely the problem if: The extractor does not respond to the power switch at all but the outlet on the front works; the variable speed control does not change motor speed; the auto-start feature (tool trigger detection) does not work but manual mode is fine.

Filter/bag is likely the problem if: Suction has gradually decreased over weeks of use (not suddenly); the filter cleaning mechanism makes a thumping sound but suction does not improve; the bag is visibly packed full. Try running the extractor briefly without the bag -- if suction is strong again, the bag or filter is clogged, not the motor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace just the carbon brushes instead of the whole motor assembly?

Yes -- if the motor still runs but has lost power and you can see sparking through the ventilation slots, worn brushes are the likely cause. Festool carbon brushes (part number varies by model year) can be replaced without removing the entire motor, often through access caps on the motor housing. However, if the motor has been run with worn brushes for an extended period, the commutator may be scored or burned. A damaged commutator requires armature replacement, which essentially means a new motor assembly. If the brushes wore down to the copper shunt wire, the commutator is almost certainly damaged.

Will this 230V motor work on 120V North American power?

No. This is a 230V motor. Running it on 120V will result in approximately 1/4 of the rated power (since power scales with voltage squared in a universal motor). The suction will be extremely weak, and the motor may stall under load. You would need a step-up transformer rated for at least 1500W continuous to operate it on a 120V supply. If your CTL extractor is a North American 120V model, you need the 120V-specific motor assembly.

Do I need to replace any seals or gaskets during motor replacement?

The motor-to-housing seal and the turbine inlet gasket should be replaced whenever the motor is removed. These seals maintain the separation between the cooling air circuit and the suction air circuit -- a leak here allows dust into the motor cooling path, which will destroy the new motor prematurely. Check the Festool EKAT parts diagram for your specific model to identify all sealing components. Do not reuse the old seals even if they look intact -- they take a compression set over time and will not seal as effectively.
