The Amseco 832T is a surface-mount magnetic reed switch in Form C (SPDT) configuration, designed for security, access control and industrial door / guard interlock duties. Originally sold under the Amseco brand (now part of Potter Electric / Mirtone) and widely deployed across North American commercial and industrial security installations, the 832T pairs a sealed hermetic reed capsule with a separate Alnico actuating magnet. With a 1 A / 100 VDC / 100 VA contact rating, the 832T is a dependable position-sensing contact for door, window, gate and cabinet status — and it is frequently read by Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, Fanuc, Schneider, Yaskawa, Panasonic and KEYENCE control systems that need a clean dry-contact input.

2. Application Scenarios — Where It Fits

The 832T is fundamentally a "door open / door closed" sensor. Anywhere a moving panel needs to report its position to a controller, the 832T fits. In real industrial sites it is most often seen in the following roles:

• Commercial & industrial security — overhead roll-up doors, personnel doors, storefront gates feeding a DSC, Honeywell or Honeywell-compatible alarm panel.
• Access control — door-status contact for card-reader-controlled entries, often wired back to a Mercury / HID controller.
• IT server room & data closet — rack-door and cabinet-door alarm, fed into a BMS or environmental monitor.
• Industrial machine guarding — CNC door, robot cell gate, machine-tool enclosure interlock. On a Fanuc cell or a Yaskawa robot line, the 832T typically drops into a safety relay chain.
• Conveyor & process equipment — guard interlock on a packaging line, a wrapping machine or a palletiser.
• Pump / compressor / HVAC cabinet — door-open detection for unattended mechanical rooms.
• Perimeter alarm — outdoor gate, fence section or overhead door wired back to a long-loop monitor.

3. Integration & Wiring Notes

• Form C gives you both NO and NC from a single device. Wire the Common lead to the panel input, then choose either the NO lead (open when door is closed) or the NC lead (closed when door is closed) depending on whether you want fail-safe or fail-secure alarming.
• Run the reed loop in SELV / Class 2 only. The 832T is rated 100 VDC / 100 VA — do not switch mains voltage directly. If the contact must drive a higher-power relay, use an interposing relay.
• Use twisted pair on long runs. Beyond roughly 30 m (100 ft) the loop can pick up EMI from VFDs and motor cables. Run shielded twisted pair and ground the shield at the panel end only.
• Watch the EOL resistor. Most modern intrusion panels expect a specific end-of-line value (1 kΩ, 2.2 kΩ, 4.7 kΩ or 6.8 kΩ). The 832T contact can be wired in series with the panel-supplied EOL — confirm the value before commissioning.
• Switching DC coils? If the 832T drives a 24 VDC relay or solenoid coil, fit a flyback diode (1N4007 or equivalent) across the coil in reverse-bias to protect the reed from inductive kick-back.
• Polarity is not required on the reed itself, but the downstream control input (for example, a sinking digital input on a Panasonic FP0R or a Yaskawa MP controller) may be polarity-sensitive — double-check the input schematic.
• Color code reference (verify with the lot's datasheet): Common = white, NC = black, NO = red. Different lots occasionally use different conventions, so always ohm-out the leads before energising.

4. Installation & Commissioning Tips

1. Mount the switch on the fixed frame and the magnet on the moving part (door, gate, panel). This keeps the wiring stationary and protects the reed capsule from vibration.
2. Align the magnet's pole face directly with the switch body. Lateral offset of more than a few millimetres will reduce the make / break gap dramatically.
3. Test the gap with a multimeter in continuity mode before you fasten anything. With the magnet in place the NO contact should read closed; with the magnet removed it should read open. This five-second test prevents hours of troubleshooting later.
4. Avoid mounting on ferrous metal. Steel and iron absorb the magnet's flux and shrink the usable gap. Use a non-ferrous spacer (aluminium, stainless) or specify a stronger magnet.
5. Tighten terminal screws to ~0.4 N·m — enough to bite the copper, not enough to crush the reed capsule inside.
6. Add a strain-relief loop on the wire so a slammed door does not yank the terminal screws loose.
