How do I connect the SH2046D to a 24V PLC output?

Most stepper drive optocouplers (PUL, DIR, ENA) are designed natively for 5V TTL logic. If you are wiring directly from a 24V industrial PLC, you must wire a current-limiting resistor (typically 2KΩ, 1/4W) in series with the PUL and DIR signal lines. Failure to do so will instantly burn out the internal optocouplers.

Why does the motor stall and emit a high-pitched whine at high speeds?

This indicates the motor has hit its "pull-out torque" limit. Stepper motor torque drops rapidly as RPM increases. Possible solutions: 1) Increase the AC/DC power supply voltage (within safe limits of the drive) to overcome back-EMF faster. 2) Lower the acceleration ramp in your controller. 3) Verify that the required Hz does not exceed the controller's output capability.

What does it mean if the motor gets extremely hot while sitting idle?

It is normal for stepper motors to get warm (up to 80°C surface temp). However, if it's overheating, check if the SH2046D supports a "Half-Current at Idle" feature via DIP switch. Enabling this will automatically reduce phase current by 50% when no pulse is received for a brief period, drastically reducing idle heating without losing position lock.
