Schmitt SBS (Balance Systems) SB-1440 Vibration Sensor / Transmitter
Schmitt SBS · SB-1440 · 4-20 mA Loop-Powered · IP65 · In stock
The Schmitt SBS SB-1440 is a loop-powered industrial vibration sensor / transmitter
from Schmitt SBS Balance Systems
(now part of the Prüftechnik / ACOEM condition monitoring family). Designed for continuous
condition monitoring of pumps, motors, fans, gearboxes, compressors and blowers, the SB-1440
delivers a proportional 4-20 mA output (configurable 0-50 mm/s RMS velocity or
acceleration range) and pairs directly with B&K Vibro, IMI Sensors, Schenck, Meggitt,
IFM, Brüel & Kjær and Emerson CSI monitors. KOEED sources new, refurbished and
legacy Schmitt SBS stock alongside the wider
industrial automation spare parts
catalog so you can keep critical rotating assets protected with one BOM.
Brand lineage: Schmitt SBS (US) → Balance Systems → Prüftechnik Condition Monitoring
(ACOEM Group). Cross-references are commonly listed against Brüel & Kjær Vibro and IMI / PCB
Piezotronics equivalents in the same machinery class.

The SB-1440 is a 2-wire loop-powered sensor, so the same pair of conductors carries both the
24 VDC excitation and the 4-20 mA measurement current. This makes it drop-in compatible with any
standard PLC analog input card from
Allen-Bradley
(1756-IF8H, 1769-IF4),
Siemens
(SM 1231 / SM 331 AI 4xU/I),
Mitsubishi
MELSEC Q68ADI or
Schneider
Modicon BMXAMI0410 — no extra signal conditioner required.
Application Scenarios — Where the SB-1440 Fits
The SB-1440 is a general-purpose plant-floor vibration transmitter. It is most often specified for
unmonitored assets that an engineer wants to bring under continuous protection without installing a
full rack-based vibration monitor. Typical deployment classes include:
-
Centrifugal pumps in water / wastewater, chemical and offshore service — bearing housing velocity trending against ISO 10816-3 limits.
-
AC induction motors driving conveyor lines, mills and extruders; pair with
Yaskawa
or
Schneider
variable frequency drives to correlate vibration with drive-side events.
-
Industrial fans and blowers in steel mills, cement kilns and HVAC plants — high-vibration environments where the IP65 body and 85 °C rating are required.
-
Gearboxes and speed reducers in packaging machinery and CNC lines, where the SB-1440 sits on the input or output bearing housing next to a
SYSMAC
or
KEYENCE
sensor stack for full machine health.
-
Screw and reciprocating compressors in petrochemical and refinery service — ATEX / IECEx SB-1440 / IS variant for Zone 1 hazardous areas.
-
Cooling-tower gearboxes and large mixers in
factory automation
retrofits where the original monitor is obsolete and the loop transmitter becomes the lowest-cost path to SCADA trending.
-
Robotics cells and CNC spindles — direct loop into a
Fanuc
or
Panasonic
controller's analog input to alarm on tool wear, imbalance and bearing failure.
Where plant machinery is already served by Prüftechnik / Schmitt SBS (VIBROTEST, VIBROWEB,
VIBRO-LINK) or B&K Vibro, the SB-1440 is a native, drop-in transmitter — no firmware or
scaling work is required on the host monitor.
Integration & Wiring Notes
|
Loop Power
|
24 VDC nominal (12–30 VDC), 2-wire current loop. Connect +V to the sensor “+” terminal,
run the loop return to the analog input “-” on the PLC / monitor.
|
|
Shield & Grounding
|
Use twisted-pair shielded cable, ground shield at the cabinet end only (single-point ground).
Float shield at the sensor end to avoid ground loops in long cable runs > 30 m.
|
|
PLC Analog Input
|
Use a current-mode input module (4-20 mA). Configure engineering range in the PLC:
4 mA = 0 mm/s, 20 mA = 50 mm/s RMS (or 25 mm/s RMS depending on factory range).
|
|
Mounting Pad Prep
|
Machine a flat spot (surface finish 3.2 µm Ra or better), tap 1/4-28 UNF, or use an M8 stud
adapter for European / IEC mount pads.

Compatible PLC Cards

Hazardous Area
|
Use a certified Zener barrier or galvanic isolator on the ATEX / IECEx variant. Verify
entity parameters against the panel loop-power supply before commissioning.

Need to convert the 4-20 mA reading into engineering units, or to compute an FFT for trend plots?

Installation & Commissioning Tips
-
Verify the part number on the label. The SB-1440 ships in several variants (0-25 vs 0-50 mm/s, velocity vs acceleration, standard vs ATEX). Confirm the
range and hazardous-area rating match the bill of material before applying power.
-
Prepare the mounting surface. Paint, rust, and dents under the sensor base will
lower the high-frequency response. Grind to bare metal, then drill and tap perpendicular to the
bearing housing.
-
Hand-tighten first, then torque to spec (typically 2.7–3.4 N·m for a
1/4-28 stud). Do not exceed the stud torque — the sensor body, not the stud, takes the
measurement.
-
Polarity matters on the loop. Reverse wiring shows up as 0 mA, not an
over-range fault. Confirm the loop current reads between 4 and 20 mA at rest before
energizing the asset.
-
Verify the loop at 4 mA and 20 mA. Use a precision mA source to inject 4 mA and
20 mA into the analog input and confirm the engineering units in the PLC read 0 mm/s and the
full-scale value respectively.
-
Capture a baseline FFT. Before handing the asset back to operations, record
a baseline spectrum and overall RMS at the SB-1440 mounting point. This baseline is what the
alarm thresholds (Alert / Action per ISO 10816-3) are set against.
-
Document loop tag and drawing revision. Most field returns on vibration
transmitters are traceable to a wrong engineering range, not a failed sensor. Tag the sensor
body and update the loop drawing with the SB-1440 part number, range and calibration date.
If a sensor reading looks suspicious, the
AI Diagnostic Tool
on KOEED can read a sensor nameplate photo and suggest the matching SB-1440 variant or a
cross-reference to B&K Vibro / IMI / IFM equivalents.
