What Is the Wolfram Tungsten Sheet Plate?

The Wolfram Tungsten Sheet Plate is a flat rectangular piece of high-purity tungsten metal, measuring 0.5mm in thickness, 100mm in width, and 100mm in length, with a certified purity of 99.95% tungsten (W). Tungsten — also known by its Germanic name "Wolfram" — has the highest melting point of any metal (3,422 degrees C), exceptional density (19.3 g/cm³), and excellent resistance to corrosion and wear at elevated temperatures. These properties make tungsten sheet indispensable in high-temperature furnace components, vacuum tube and X-ray tube fabrication, radiation shielding, electrical contacts, and specialized electrodes.

In short: This is a single piece of 99.95% pure tungsten sheet, 0.5mm thick and 100mm square. If you are fabricating a heating element, radiation shield, vacuum component, or high-temperature fixture that requires tungsten's unique thermal and electrical properties, this sheet gives you a starting blank with known purity and dimensions.

Working with Tungsten — What You Need to Know

1. Tungsten Is Brittle at Room Temperature

Unlike steel or aluminum, tungsten cannot be easily bent, folded, or formed at room temperature — it will crack. Tungsten undergoes a ductile-to-brittle transition at a temperature that depends on the specific alloy and processing history, but as a general rule, forming operations should be performed at elevated temperatures (several hundred degrees Celsius). If your application requires a bent or shaped tungsten part, plan your fabrication process accordingly. Cutting is typically done by abrasive methods (grinding, EDM) or with carbide tooling at low speeds.

2. Oxidation at High Temperatures in Air

While tungsten has an extraordinarily high melting point, it oxidizes rapidly in air above approximately 500 degrees C, forming volatile tungsten oxides that evaporate from the surface. For high-temperature applications in oxidizing atmospheres, tungsten must be protected by a vacuum environment, an inert gas atmosphere (argon, helium), or a reducing atmosphere (hydrogen). If you plan to use this sheet as a heating element, you must operate it in an appropriate atmosphere or vacuum.

3. Density and Weight

At 19.3 g/cm³, tungsten is nearly twice as dense as lead and almost as dense as gold. This 0.5mm x 100mm x 100mm sheet weighs approximately 96.5 grams — surprisingly heavy for its small size. Keep this in mind when designing mounting structures or estimating shipping weight for larger tungsten components.

Common Applications for Tungsten Sheet

  • Vacuum furnace components: Heating elements, heat shields, and work-holding fixtures that must maintain structural integrity at temperatures where most other metals have long since melted.
  • X-ray tube anodes and targets: Tungsten's high atomic number makes it an efficient X-ray producer and its thermal properties allow it to withstand the intense electron beam heating.
  • Radiation shielding: Small-area shielding for gamma and X-ray sources where lead's lower melting point or mechanical softness makes it unsuitable.
  • Electrical contacts and electrodes: Spot welding electrodes, arc lamp electrodes, and plasma cutting electrodes where tungsten's arc resistance and high melting point provide long service life.
  • Research and laboratory: Sputtering targets, evaporation boats, and custom vacuum chamber components fabricated from high-purity starting stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I verify the purity of this tungsten sheet?

The 99.95% purity claim should be verified from the product label or certificate of analysis if one is provided. For applications where purity is critical (semiconductor processing, vacuum tube fabrication), request available documentation when placing your order. Non-destructive purity verification methods include X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, which can identify metallic contaminants at the percent level, though trace-level certification requires more sophisticated techniques like GDMS.

Can this sheet be cut to a smaller size?

You can cut this tungsten sheet yourself using appropriate methods — abrasive cutoff wheels, wire EDM, or laser cutting with proper fume extraction. However, due to tungsten's brittleness, shearing with sheet metal shears is not recommended for 0.5mm thickness as it may cause cracking along the cut edge. If you require tungsten sheet in a different size than 100mm x 100mm, contact us with your dimensional requirements and we will check availability.

What is the difference between "Wolfram" and "Tungsten"?

"Wolfram" and "Tungsten" refer to the same element (chemical symbol W, atomic number 74). "Wolfram" is the name used in German and many European languages, while "Tungsten" is the English name. The two terms are completely interchangeable in a metallurgical context. The element's chemical symbol "W" comes from "Wolfram." The dual naming persists in industry — you will see both terms used on product labels, datasheets, and material certificates.

Can I weld or braze tungsten to other metals?

Tungsten can be joined to other metals, but it requires specialized techniques. Tungsten's high melting point and susceptibility to oxidation make conventional welding difficult. Common joining methods include vacuum brazing (using nickel-based or precious metal brazing alloys), diffusion bonding under high temperature and pressure, and mechanical fastening. For electrical contact applications, tungsten-copper composites or mechanical riveting are often more practical than attempting to braze pure tungsten sheet directly to copper conductors.
