Installation & Commissioning Tips

A correct installation is the difference between a seal that lasts the next service interval and one that fails on day one. Use the procedure below for any XD1437E-class radial lip seal on a transfer case, axle or industrial gearbox:

1. Isolate and depressurize the housing. Drain the lubricant into a clean container so you can inspect for metallic debris — heavy swarf indicates a bearing or gear problem that will chew up the new seal.
2. Inspect the seat for burrs, thread damage and out-of-square faces. A lathe-finished, burr-free seat is mandatory for cassette and metal-OD seals.
3. Clean the shaft with a non-chlorinated solvent. Check runout with a dial indicator; more than 0.05 mm TIR at the seal journal will pump oil past the lip.
4. Dry-fit the seal to confirm axial and radial clearance. The seal should slide in by hand with light resistance. If it requires force, the bore is undersize.
5. Lubricate the lip and OD with the operating fluid or a compatible assembly grease. For rubber-OD seals, a thin film of silicone or soap solution helps sliding.
6. Press the seal square using a driver that contacts the outer face only. Stop the instant the seal is flush with the housing face — do not bottom against a shoulder that is not designed for it.
7. Refill with the specified lubricant to the correct level, then run the equipment at low speed for 10–15 minutes to seat the lip before going to full load.
8. Re-torque any case bolts to the manufacturer pattern and re-check for seepage after the first thermal cycle. A small initial wetness is normal; a steady drip is not.
