3. Integration & Wiring Notes
Spring-pressure contacts mean the busbar geometry, surface finish and clamping force are not
optional — they are part of the design. Use tin-plated or nickel-plated copper busbars
(0.5 mm – 1.0 mm silver-plated recommended for long-term reliability), and confirm the
contact zone is free of burrs, oil and oxidation before final assembly. Apply the manufacturer
torque sequence on the single heatsink stud only after the spring contacts are fully seated;
a typical mounting force is 3 kN to 5 kN depending on the heatsink planarity.
The auxiliary pin header carries the gate-emitter signals for each IGBT, the auxiliary emitter
return (Kelvin emitter), the NTC thermistor and an optional fault/desaturation input. Use a
twisted-pair or coax harness from the gate driver to the SKiM pin header and keep the loop area
under 1 cm2 to limit dV/dt-induced gate ringing. A dedicated gate-driver board
(Semikron SKYPER, or third-party Concept / Power Integrations SCALE drivers) is recommended —
bare bootstrap circuits are not sufficient at 300 A and 16 kHz+ operation.
For the 3-level NPC topology, route the DC-link bank with a low-inductance laminate busbar
(typically < 30 nH total loop) to keep the over-voltage spike at turn-off within 80% of VCES.
The neutral-point clamp diodes and the SiC free-wheel diodes are co-packaged inside the
SKiM304GD12T4D, so external anti-parallel diodes are not required. Always keep the switching
frequency and dead-time symmetrical between the high-side and low-side IGBTs of each phase leg
to balance the loss distribution across the SiC diode junction.
4. Installation & Commissioning Tips

Thermal interface material: Use a high-quality thermal pad (3 W/mK or higher) or a
thin solderable TIM. Confirm heatsink planarity ≤ 50 μm across the mounting footprint to avoid
spring-contact deflection and uneven clamping.

First power-up sequence: Apply the gate-driver 15 V supply before the DC-link voltage,
and verify gate-emitter threshold (VGE(th)) on every IGBT via the SKiM test pins before
energizing the bus. Never connect the DC link without the gate driver being online and
the interlock chain closed.

Desaturation (DESAT) blanking time: Start at 3 μs and tune to your specific
cabling inductance. SiC diode reverse-recovery is short, so DESAT response time is
critical to avoid nuisance trips.

Insulation test: Apply 4000 V AC between the base-plate and the shorted power
terminals for 1 minute before the first commissioning. A megohmmeter at 1000 V is a
quick health check on return-from-storage units.

ESD handling: The spring-contact area and the gate pins are ESD-sensitive.
Always work on a grounded mat, wear a wrist strap, and store the SKiM304GD12T4D in its
original anti-static foam until the busbar is ready.

Storage: Re-bake the module at 125°C for 8 hours if the ESD bag has been
open for more than 12 months, or if the humidity indicator card reads > 10%.
